FEW TIMES BACK…..
Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a large
audience. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio
networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines.
Types of drama in numerous cultures were probably the first mass-media, going back into
the Ancient World.
The first dated printed book known is the "Diamond Sutra", printed in China in 868
AD, although it is clear that books were printed earlier.
Johannes Gutenberg printed the first book on a printing press with movable type in 1453.
Newspapers developed from about 1612, with the first example in English in 1620;but
they took until the 19th century to reach a mass-audience directly.
During the 20th century, the growth of mass media was driven by technology.
Radio and television allowed the electronic duplication of information for the first time.
Mass media had the economics of linear replication: a single work could make money. An
example of Riel and Neil's theory. proportional to the number of copies sold, and as
volumes went up, unit costs went down, increasing profit margins further. Vast fortunes
were to be made in mass media.
Purposes
Mass media can be used for various purposes:
Advocacy, both for business and social concerns. This
can include advertising, marketing, propaganda,
public relations, and political communication.
Entertainment, traditionally through performances of
acting, music, and sports, along with light reading;
since the late 20th century also through video and
computer games.
Public service announcements.
FORMS
Electronic media and print media include:
 Broadcasting, in the narrow sense, for radio and television.

 Many instances of various types of recorded discs or tapes. In the 20th century, these were
mainly used for music. Video and computer uses followed.

 Film, most often used for entertainment, but also for documentaries.

 The Internet, which has many uses and presents both opportunities and challenges.
Examples can include Blogs and podcasts (such as news, music, pre-recorded speech, and
video)

 Mobile phones, which can be used for rapid breaking news and short clips of
entertainment like jokes, horoscopes, alerts, games, music, and advertising

 Publishing, including electronic publishing

 Video games, which have developed into a mass form of media since cutting-edge devices
such as the PlayStation 3, XBox 360, and Wii broadened their use.
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
Newspapers
Your ad has size and share, and can be as large as necessary to communicate as
much of a story as you care to tell.
Split-run tests are available to test your copy and your offer.
Free help is usually available to create and produce your ad.
Fast closings. The ad you decide to run today can be in your customer's hands
two days from now.
Magazines
High reader involvement means more attention will be paid to your
advertisement.
Less waste circulation. You can place your ads in magazines read primarily by
buyers of your product or service.
The smaller the page (generally eight and half by eleven inches) permits even
small ads to stand out.
ADVANTAGES
Radio
A universal medium. Can be enjoyed at home, at work, and while driving. Most
people listen to the radio at one time or another during the day.
Permits you to target your advertising dollars to the market most likely to respond to
your offer.
Permits you to create a personality for your business using only sounds and voices.
Free creative help is ususally available.
Rates can generally be negotiated.
Least inflated medium. During the past ten years, radio rates have gone up less than
other media.
Television
Permits you to reach great numbers of people on a national or regional level.
Independent stations and cable offer new opportunities to pinpoint local audiences.
Very much an image-building medium.
ADVANTAGES
Direct Mail
Your advertising message is targeted to those most likely to buy your product or service.
Your message can be as long as necessary to fully tell your story.
You have total control over all elements of creation and production.
A "silent" medium. Your message is hidden from your competitors until it's too late for
them to react.
Telemarketing
You can easily answer questions about your product/service.
It's easy to prospect and find the right person to talk to.
Cost effective compared to direct sales.
Highly measurable results.
You can get a lot of information if your script is properly structured.

AND MANY MORE TO GO……..

DISADVANTAGES
Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it,
and eventually they will believe it.
--Adolf Hitler
Misguiding the public and ultimately their
opinion
MEDIA has the ultimate power of moulding our
thought process
Eg the terrorism and related windings around Muslim
community in India.
SLANTING
Without the authentication and
authorization from government ,
MEDIA reveals some sensational facts
and figures which are breeching many
laws also.
They mould our opinions as per their
requirement and T.R.P.
DECLINE IN OUR CULTURE
Children of our generation have lost their innocence, they are more
demanding for luxuries rather than their needs eg mobiles and
vehicles.
The way the relationships of every relation shown has also redefined
our definitions of relations in society as well as ourselves.
People spend more than needed time with MEDIA and its sources,
leading to less societal interaction.
It has given rise to various negative habits like smoking, addiction
and negative actions like crime, rash driving with the wrong view
of media industry.
Health related problems also have increased tremendously.

AND THIS LIST GOES ON….

CREATING NEWS
They
Playinghad
withearlier done and
the emotional thisreligious
with the spreading
sentiments of rumor
of viewers.
about the end of this world by 2012, as per the
predictions by MAYA Civilization and its calender.
They don’t test the hypothesis on scientific grounds
instead they reveal them as it is, panicking the
citizens.
In case of national alert situation like war, riots a single
rumor or misspelled news has done long range harms
then ever predicted.
PRIORITIES MISPLACED
MEDIA has talked a lot about failure of Common Wealth
Games in terms of
organizational failure
Preparation delays
Mass volunteer walkout
Alleged racism
Infrastructural compromise
Terror threats
But failed to talk about the following more burning
issues lying beneath
Labour violations
Child labour
Social and environmental impact
PRIVACY VIOLATION
The lives of our CELEBRITIES including our bollywood ACTORS
and ACTRESS, T.V characters, CRICKETERS etc …….are made
public; theirs nothing private in their lives. They are like open
book in the limelight for every INTERESTED people on the
earth.
Eg: the continuous live telecast of marriage of Abhishek and
Ashwarya, Mahendra singh dhoni, Sania Mirza………

Even the life of any common people can be put on any of the
websites and sometimes social networking sites harassing them
to the any extent.
Eg:scams videos placed on FACEBOOK and other sites.
MORE USAGE OF TIME DEVIATION
More of public time and interest is wasted on astrology.
Horror shows and reality shows.
Instead of showing real news they shows news which are
of less important or sometimes of no importance.
e.g. gossips about film celebrity
In place of talking of problem and its solution, they beat
around the bushes.
