What is reformation ?
• Reforming is a process by which the molecular structure of a
hydrocarbon is rearranged to alter its properties.
• Here we are reforming methane to synthesis gas
Application of Synthesis gas
• Synthesis gas is used to directly reduce iron ore to sponge iron
• Production of diesel using Fischer-Tropsch process
• Production of Methanol
• Gas lighting
• Fuel for internal combustion engines
Different methods to produce
• Steam Reforming:
CH4 + H2O ⇌ CO + 3 H2
CO + H2O ⇌ CO2 + H2
• Dry Reformation:
CO2 + CH4 → 2 H2 + 2 CO
𝑛 𝑚
• Partial oxidation: 𝐶𝑛 𝐻𝑚 + → 𝑛𝐶𝑂 + 𝐻2

Selection of catalyst for DRM
• Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst: Literature on this topic shows that
most active catalysts for dry reforming if methane are based on
metals of groups 8,9 and 10. Rh, Ru and Pt have been studied
as catalysts and show high activity. But, due to high prices and
low availability of these metals, Ni and Co are considered for
industrial purposes.
Novelty of this project
Almost all bimetallic catalysts form crystalline structure, which
have low surface area. To enhance the surface area we are
going to reduce porous NiCo2O4. This is done by conducting
controlled reduction in an Inconel tube.
Expectation from this project
By the end of this project we will be able to conclude:
• To what extend should NiCo2O4 be reduced so as to not to
compromise on its porous structure and the activity of the
catalyst
• Is porous Ni-Co catalyst a good catalyst for dry reformation
reaction
Experiments to be conducted
• After the synthesis of NiCo2O4 , it should be subjected to
reduction with H2 at 400 C in an inconel tube.
• After reduction, the sample should be characterised by EDAX to
study the composition of the material.
• Then the catalysts selectivity and activity should be studied for
dry reformation reaction.
