Variable Power Supply
INTRODUCTION
Introduction
Power Supply
A device that supplies electric energy to
an electrical load is called power supply. It
converts the alternating current (AC) from
outlets into direct current (DC) at some
specified voltage.
Introduction
Regulated power supply will accept
an input and give a constant dc output. The
basic components of a regulated power
supply are as follows:
Step down transformer
Rectifier
Filter
Regulator
Introduction
A step down transformer will step
down the voltage from AC mains to the
required voltage level. This is kind of
transformer is used by the group for this
project. The turn's ratio of the required
voltage value. The output of the transformer
is given as an input to the rectifier circuit.
Introduction
Rectifier is an electronic circuit
consisting of diodes which the process of
rectification occurs. Rectification is the
process of converting AC into desired DC
quantity. In this project, a full wave bridge
rectifier is used to construct the prototype.
Introduction
In the DC filtration, the rectified voltage
from the rectifier produces a pulsating DC
voltage having a very high ripple content but
this project aims to produce a pure ripple free
dc waveform. The capacitor serves as filter
and it is connected along the output of the
rectifier and the resultant output waveform.
Introduction
The output voltage or current will
change or fluctuate when there is change in
the input from AC mains or due to change in
load current at the output of the regulated
power supply. This problem can be solve and
be eliminated by using a regulator as it can
maintain the output constant even when
changes at the input or any other changes
occur.
Introduction
A dual polarity power supply is capable of
supplying +/-DC voltage. Dual polarity power
supply is created mostly to power up operational
amplifier circuits and other circuits that require
dual supply voltage. The circuit design of this
dual polarity power supply is regulated with the
use of a positive (LM317) and negative (LM337)
voltage regulators.
INTRODUCTION
Objective
The main objective of this study is to design
and construct a prototype, a power supply that
converts alternating current (AC) to direct current
(DC) using regulator. The output will have a dual
polarity output of 0 to -28.5 volts and 0 to +28.5
volts and can be adjustable using potentiometer.
In addition, this paper will also discuss the
obtained results and prove that the desire output
was met.
INTRODUCTION
Scope
The main aim of this project is to create
a dual variable power supply ranging from 0
to -28.5 and 0 to +28.5 volts. The goal is to
convert successfully the maintains AC to DC
supply.

Testing Procedure
A digital multimeter was used to test and
verify the values of the output from the power
source.
To verify the 0 v to -28.5 voltage output, the
test probe of digital multimeter should be in series
with the ground and negative terminal output of the
prototype then adjust the potentiometer from
minimum to maximum rotation. This test yielded a
-28.5 V maximum for negative voltage result.
Testing Procedure
To verify the 0 to +28.5 output voltage, the
digital multimeter should be in series with the
ground and the positive terminal output of the
prototype then adjust the potentiometer from
minimum to maximum rotation. This test yielded a
0 to +28.5 V result.
