Backup Exec Lockdown Server Service (LDS)
• Validates processes originating write requests to disk storage before
allowing them to write
– Validates a certificate
– Only processes signed by Veritas are trusted for writes
– Maintains a list of trusted BE servers from which write to disk is allowed

• Communicates with VirtFile (VFF) filter driver which is used to lockdown the disk
storage
• Applicable to network B2D, locally attached B2D, RDX or Deduplication Storage
• Installed with Agent for Windows to manage writes to Deduplication Storage

VFF Filter Driver
• Locks down disk storage by preventing writes by any unauthorized
processes
• Maintains a list of protected folders that is refreshed every time the
BE Server Service restarts
• Protects its own registry keys and values
• Lockdown can be disabled from the BE Console
• The driver registry and the driver file itself ([Link]) remain protected

Instant Cloud Recovery

Cloud-based Disaster Recovery

20 Copyright © 2019 Veritas Technologies, LLC

About Instant Cloud Recovery (ICR)
New feature in Backup Exec that provides cloud-based Disaster Recovery by integrating with
Azure Site Recovery (ASR)

ASR replicates VMs to Azure almost continuously so if there is a disaster, the user can failover to
replicated VMs

Instant Cloud Recovery supports Hyper-V and VMWare VMs

Monitors Replication health Enables replication of ASR discovered VMs from the BE console

Customers can use the Azure portal for other Azure operations

21 Copyright © 2019 Veritas Technologies, LLC

About Azure Site Recovery (ASR)
• Disaster recovery using ASR
• Reduces infrastructure costs
• Amazingly simple to deploy and manage
• Minimize downtime with dependable recovery (low
RTO)
• Continuous replication with minimal data loss (minutes
of RPO)
• DR drills for compliance with zero impact to production
applications

Environment Check for Deduplication Storage

• During an upgrade to BE 20, Environment Check will

test for the presence of Deduplication Storage
– Checks the version of the dedupe software currently
installed by reading registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\PDDE\Version
– Checks that the spoold and spad services are running and
enabled
– Queries BEDB for the Deduplication Storage folder path

• If Deduplication is installed:
– Environment check will run the storage conversion time
estimation tool
– Estimated time will be shown on Data Backup page of

GDPR Guard

Easy compliance with privacy laws like GDPR by

blocking sensitive data from being viewed or restored

38 Copyright © 2019 Veritas Technologies, LLC

GDPR Guard
• Data in backups and DR copies must be kept in
accordance with retention policies, it may not be
possible to purge personal data immediately
• GDPR Guard provides a method to block files
stored in backups from being restored and to
manage erasure (DLM)
• Ensures that even though the data cannot be permanently erased from
storage immediately,
– Data is kept well protected using encryption and
– The data as well as metadata cannot be viewed nor restored back to production systems
– Offline information does not become available online

GDPR Guard Overview
• Use BEMCLI to provide a list of blocked/sensitive files via a CSV file format, making those files
non‑restorable from BE console

• BE will not show blacklisted items that have been backed up in either restore view or search

• Restore jobs provide an option to override and allow a restore of blacklisted items
(System Logon Account owner only)

• Blocked item list can be exported to an external file that can be saved as backup

• Audit trail is maintained for import/export, restore job override and restore job execution

About Persisted Files

On Import, blocked files lists are stored in

BIN files are converted and encrypted

each server BOM, regardless of the encoding used in the
CSV Import File
• Path: <BE Install directory>\ Data\BLFileInfo

Blacklist Filtering and Restore Jobs
• Blacklist Filtering
– Catalog reads file list from FH file
– Catalog reads blacklisted file list from BIN
– Filters the blacklisted files from restore or search
– If the override option is selected then filtering is not used

• Restore job log reports that blocked files have been filtered, actual file names
are not provided

Override Option

Available only to the owner of

SLA (System Logon Account)

If the “Allow restore of

blocked items” checkbox is
selected, a reason is required
and is written to the audit log

About the Override Option

Allows blacklisted items to be

• Displayed in restore and search views
• Selected for restore
• Restored per job parameters

If Search is initiated from the Restore Wizard, then override option

also applies to search results

Override Option is NOT displayed when

• Restore is initiated from backup set tab under ‘Storage’ or ‘Jobs’ view

GDPR Guard in CAS Environment
Import operations can only be run on the Central Admin Server (CAS) and are
1 blocked on Managed Backup Exec Servers (MBES)

Blocked files information and the encryption key from the CAS are automatically
synced with MBESs which will then honour the blocked items
• If an MBES is not online during the import on the CAS, then blocked files
2 information will be shared when it comes online
• If a new MBES is added, blocked files information and encryption key
will be synced with that MBES

In rolling upgrades, MBES will not honour blocked files until they are upgraded to
3 Backup Exec 20.3

Export Command

• Exports the blocked files information to a CSV file at specified location

– Exported CSV name: [Link]
– Exported CSV contains: Server name(s) and full path of blocked items
– Exported CSV format: UTF-8 encoded with a BOM

• Creates an Audit Log entry

• Backup the blocked items in the Persisted Files by running
– Export-BEItemsBlocked

Exported CSV files can be used for recovery in case of Database or BIN file corruption

Secure By Default Communications

Backup Exec connections use only TLS 1.2 and support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 is disabled

BE 15 FP1 and newer use the highest TLS version supported by both the Agent for Windows and the
BE Server, in most cases that is TLS v1.2

Upgrade checks for Agents for Windows older than BE 15 FP1, if none are in use TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are
disabled by default

User consent is required to continue to use an Agent for Windows older than BE 15 FP1 (if detected)

Backup Exec uses TLS 1.2 to communicate with SQL and when accessing the Backup Exec Database
