A serial killer operated in northern California from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. He murdered at least 7 people in separate events with time between killings. He sent letters and cryptograms to the press claiming to have killed 37 victims. The killer targeted young couples in secluded areas and used guns and knives. He telephoned the police after murders to report them. Investigators used behavioral analysis, fingerprint analysis, background checks, and cryptoanalysis but were never able to arrest the killer known as Zodiac.
