(September 13, 1903 – March 24, 1970)
 A poet, playwright,
novelist, and labor leader,
and is among the Filipino
writers who practiced
“committed art”.
 He married Honarata
“Atang” de la Rama, the
“Queen of Kundiman,”
who also became a
National Artist for theater,
dance, and music.
 Hernandez started writing
when he was a teenager and
his Tagalog works were
published in the newspaper
Watawat.
 His works talked about the
struggles of Filipino laborers
 Known for his criticism of
social injustices in the
Philippines and was later
imprisoned for his involvement
in the communist movement.

In 1941, he joined the resistance
movement against Japanese forces. After
the second world war, Hernandez was
appointed by Pres. Sergio Osmeña as
councilor of Manila to facilitate the city's
reconstruction. He became an advocate of
labor rights and organized labor unions.
Hernandez was arrested on January 26 on the
suspicion that he was among the leaders of the
rebellion. In prison, Hernandez produced his most
notable works, Isang Dipang Langit, Luha ng
Buwaya and Ibong Mandaragit. Out of prison, he
resumed writing and became a columnist for the
Tagalog tabloid Taliba. He went on to become a
professor at the University of the Philippines.
