Formulate a strong strategy that
shall lay the foundation for how
e-Types should move forward..
Identify why a strong strategy is essential for the future business
success
Business strategy is making informed recommendations of what actions a
company should take to gain competitive advantage. Strategy concerns how
organizations or individuals can achieve certain goals by allocating appropriate
resources.
From coursera strategic formulation classes we learned how a Danish brewing
company Carlsberg became so successful in China. Because it acquired a
number of local breweries, established breweries, and continued to sell these
beers under the logo of the local breweries.
Did they worry about what they liked as beer makers?
No
Formulate a business strategy that suits the needs and visions of
your organization.
What is the need of e-type? To make money.
What is the vision of e-type? Design revolutionary edgy designs
How they should e-type formulate the strategy?
Deliver edgy design work wherever the customer likes it. Deliver classic
design in rest of the cases. Do not stop delivering classic designs. E-type
should have varieties of design options to suit the customer needs.
What should be E-type strategy ?
• E-type strategy should be ‘catering according to customer likes’
• Doing business is not about what the business owners/staff liked. It is
about understanding the market needs. Who is the market here?
Individuals grew up with different likings as per each one’s taste.
• Strategic management Rumelt theorist says strategy has to be a
reasonable, effective, or adaptive response to the external
environment. If e-type is not willing to adapt to the external
environment they will not be successful.
Explain why managers too often formulate sub-optimal strategies.

[Link] can not process information without being contaminated by
a number of biases.
In e-type the designers have the tendency to be self interested actors
(Homo Economicus) and they find satisfactory solution instead of
optimal ones.
Evaluate this strategy through Rumelt’s way
Rumelt, the strategic management theorist has a method for how to
evaluate the strategy.
It has to be a reasonable, or effective, or adaptive response to the
external environment. And also to the changes that are ongoing in that
environment.
E-type ‘catering according to customer likes’ strategy satisfies all the
evaluating criteria mentioned by Rumelt.
How should e-Types implement their strategy going forward? Describe
a step by step plan for implementing this strategy, including short term
(e.g., staring tomorrow), medium term (next few weeks/months) and
long term (next year and beyond) actions.

Justification for my choice
I work in a Technology Business Incubator. I mentor many startups on a day to day
basis. The justification I wrote for this e-type scenario came from my own personal
experience.
Money is very important and it is very difficult to raise during early stage of ventures.
Founders and decision makers should not be so focused on their likes and dislikes while
making strategy.
Some of our startups are doing consulting services just to raise money for their startup
needs so they will be able to follow their passion someday. The strategy I choose here is
very practical.
In the case of e-type follow Michael Porter logic -Ends, ways, means. Begin with what
the ends are, the position you'd like to achieve. Figure out how you're going to do it, and
then the means would be what are the skills that you need to achieve that position
