Understanding Local Area Networks (LAN)

This document provides an overview of local area networks (LANs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs). It defines LANs as computer networks spanning a small area like a single building, and notes they connect via wires. WLANs allow wireless connection via radio waves within a limited range like a home or office. While LANs and WLANs both share files locally, LANs are faster, more secure, and less affected by interference than WLANs. The document outlines the similarities and differences between wired and wireless local networks.

Introduction
• local-area network (LAN) is a
computer network that spans a
relatively small area. Most often, a
LAN is confined to a single room,
building or group of buildings,
however, one LAN can be connected
to other LANs over any distance via
telephone lines and radio waves.
Types of local area network
Wireless local area network :-is one in which a mobile user or a -1
computer user can connect to the local area network through the
.radio waves by using the Wi-Fi
But ability of connection is limited within a limited area such as
.home , coffee , computer laboratory and so on
But actually this WLAN is more appropriate for the mobile than
the computer because the mobiles are usually carried from one
place to another
wired local area network :-is one in which -2
the nodes are located relatively close to one
another and use wires to connect the
network and thus is more appropriate for
computer and devices like it because they
are located in a particular place that their
.place is not changed a lot
Similarities between LAN and WLAN
• The similar thing between the LAN and
WLAN is that their network lines
communication are limited within a
limited area and they both are used for the
same purposes like downloading and
uploading the resources and information.
Differences between LAN and WLAN
• Network Interruption due to external interference. WLAN
highly depends on the environment that you are in. Signal
varies as it reflect, refract, lost and etc depending on the
environment. However, sometimes due to some materials,
the signal may actually extends. LAN may or may not be
affected by external interference depending on the quality of
the cable and possibly due to.
• LAN is much faster than the WLAN.
• The LAN uses wires to provide network but WLAN uses radio
waves to provide network.
• LAN is commonly used in fixed network but WLAN is common
in areas computers are moved quite often
• LAN is more secured compared to WLAN
