Communication's Impact on Society

This module discusses the impact of communication on society and the world. It begins with a quote emphasizing the importance of understanding differences in perception when communicating. The module will teach about how communication affects society and its importance for professional and academic purposes. It presents an excerpt from Sherry Turkle's TED talk where she discusses how technology influences social interaction. People increasingly rely on their phones rather than others for acceptance, companionship and interaction. This can negatively impact real-world social relationships. The module aims to explain how communication impacts society and the importance of communication skills for work and other areas of life like family, friendship, citizenship and international relations. Effective communication is key to building strong relationships while issues often stem from poor listening and understanding

Module 3

Impact of Communication
on Society and the World
“To effectively communicate, we must realize that
we are all different in the way we perceive the world
and use this understanding as a guide to our
communication with others.” This famous quote
from Tony Robbins means that how we see the
world can be our guide to effective communication.
This also means that by embracing cultural
diversity in communication, we can be the effective
communicators that we want to be/ In this module,
you will learn that communication has great impact
on society and the world.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you should be

able to:
• Explain the impact of communication
on society and the world; and
• Enumerate the importance of
communication specifically for
professional and academic purposes.
FAMILIARIZE
Read the following excerpt of Sherry Turkle’s TED
talk titled, Connected but Alone.

Connected, but Alone Excerpt

Jimmy Fischer
In Connected, but Alone Ted talk, Sherry Turkle talks about how
technology has a big influence on our social interaction at this day in
age. The technological world brings us together but also brings us apart
from the real world. Sherry explains that many people who look for
acceptance, companionship, and interaction mostly go to their phone in
order to seek that interaction with others. This is becoming a big
problem in our society because instead of relying on others, people are
relying on their phones. In Sherry’s speech, she explains that when
people need to be interacting socially, they turn to their phones and do
not give their full attention to others who are in the environment at the
time. Friends, co-workers, and family members feel neglected and they
do not receive the interaction that they need. It is not too late to change
this behavior. They way we interact with people can be improved if we
keep away from our phones to “help” us with social interaction.

humans?
CONCEPTUALIZE
Communication is an essential element of
relationship. You might have heard of
friends, couples, and even families tearing
apart because of miscommunication.
Communication gap, when left unnoticed
leads to misunderstanding.
Communication in Your Life

You spend hours communicating in your

daily life.
There are different areas wherein
communication gives an impact to our lives
and the world we live in. These are the
family, friendship, school, work,
citizenship, and international relations.
Communication in Your Life

You spend hours communicating in your daily life. When you order food, you
use language to communicate. When your instructors ask you for your insights,
you are expected to give feedback. In addition, there are different areas wherein
communication gives an impact to our lives and the world we live in. These are
the family, friendship, school, work, citizenship, and international relations.
Family

Your ability to communicate properly

has a strong impact on your life and at
home. Guidance counselors said that
some of the problems in family life come
from poor listening habits. When people
are connected to each other, the goal is
more likely to be achieved.
Family

Your ability to communicate properly has a strong impact on your life and at
home. Guidance counselors said that some of the problems in family life come
from poor listening habits. Argumentation, blaming, and fighting in homes may
be avoided if the family members strive to communicate clearly. Many family
members feel misunderstood or ignored by those closest to them. Frequently,
these feelings root from long-term communication issues. When people are
connected to each other, the goal is more likely to be achieved. When you read a
story to your sister or brother, you are expressing that you are devoting to your
time to be with them. This is communication in its sense. Actions such as hug or
pat on the shoulder from your parents communicate that they love you and that
they care for you.
Friendship

Most friendships are built on clear

communication and one-to-one
sharing. This includes each one’s
ability to communicate loyalty,
warmth, supportiveness, honesty, the
ability to keep secrets, and a sense of
humor.
Friendship

Usually your friends laugh with you. At times, they listen whenever you have
something to share. People often take friends for granted until a friend moves
away or becomes a better friend to someone else. Most friendships are built on
clear communication and one-to-one sharing. This includes each one’s ability to
communicate loyalty, warmth, supportiveness, honesty, the ability to keep
secrets, and a sense of humor. Good friends are also those that are easy to
communicate with.
Work
You might have seen job posts that show
basic qualification for the potential
applicants. Usually, good communication
skills, whether written or orally, are
expected.
Many disagreements and issues in the
workplace root from poor communication
skills. Gossips and rumors are considered
“noise” which should be avoided in the
process of communication in the workplace.
Work

You might have seen job posts that show basic qualification for the potential
applicants. Usually, good communication skills, whether written or orally, are
expected. During the job interview, questions are asked beginning with the personal
then goes to academic and professional topics to find out how deep you think and
how well you can compose and communicate your thoughts. First impression last,
as the saying goes. The interviewer may not know you for the first time but how you
communicate verbally and nonverbally will give the employer a hint whether you
possess what they need in their company or not. As you go on your work, discussing
instructions, policies, guidelines, and tasks with your colleagues will all require
good communication skills. Many disagreements and issues in the workplace root
from poor communication skills. Gossips and rumors are considered “noise” which
should be avoided in the process of communication in the workplace.
Citizenship

Citizens may communicate their thoughts

and feelings as part of the country they live
in. They may use communication to serve,
suggest and to recommend some
improvements with the way the authorities
run the government.
Many communities view their your members
as assets who can contribute to the lives of
other community members such as senior
citizens or preschoolers.
Citizenship

Citizens may communicate their thoughts and feelings as part of the country
they live in. They may use communication to serve, suggest and to recommend
some improvements with the way the authorities run the government, However,
citizens must make intelligent decisions in voting for local, state, and national
candidates. Before making these decisions, they must listen to and then analyze
speeches, debates, and political advertisements by the candidates. On the other
hand, a democratic government depends on the right of freedom of speech for its
citizens. Many communities view their your members as assets who can
contribute to the lives of other community members such as senior citizens or
preschoolers.
International Relations
Being part of the world, there are times
that you will have to communicate to
people who may not be part of your
immediate community.
Without a common language that will
be understood by two citizens coming
from different cultures, purposeful
communication may not happen.
International Relations

Being part of the world, there are times that you will have to communicate to
people who may not be part of your immediate community. International trade
operations for example may require you to know a language that is known to the
other party. Importers and exporters for example make use of English, the lingua
France of business to discuss and understand business and legal contracts.
Without a common language that will be understood by two citizens coming
from different cultures, purposeful communication may not happen.
Communication is the means
by which you reach out to the rest
of the world and by which the
world reaches out to you.

• Directions: Watch the TedTalk (URL below). Then, answer 8 of the 10
discussion questions below on your own sheet(s) or paper. Answer these
questions in depth (you need at least 3- 4 sentences to adequately answer each
one). I will be posting the video in FB on Saturday, June 20 where everyone is
expected to have at least 1 comment to contribute, but you have time to
prepare your thoughts. Watch the video. Pause it, rewind it, watch it again,
and make sure you have solid, meaningful responses to each of these
questions. One sentence responses or shallow answers will not get a 1.0
grade. You will turn in your responses (TASK 9) in our meeting via zoom on
MONDAY.
