Dry Riser System for Fire Safety

A dry riser is a vertical pipe system installed in a building's stairwell or elevator shaft to provide firefighters quick access to water in the event of a fire. Dry risers remain empty until connected to a water source by firefighters. They eliminate the need for firefighters to drag hoses up through tall buildings, saving time and reducing hazards during firefighting and evacuation. Dry risers typically include breeching inlets at ground level for firefighters to connect hoses, as well as landing valves installed on each floor inside locked cabinets to access water. They can effectively supply water for buildings between 18-60 meters tall.

DRY RISER A dry riser is a vertical mains fitted into a staircase or lift enclosure.

Dry Risers and wet risers are a system of pipework utilized by the fire
brigade to quickly get water in the event of a fire breaking out.
Rising mains in buildings can be either filled
with water (Wet Riser) or left dry (Dry Riser).
Where mains are supplied from rooftop tanks
and pumps in very tall buildings, the mains are
referred to as ‘Falling Mains’ or sometimes
‘DOWNCOMERS The installation of risers
removes the need for fire fighters to have to
drag charged fire hoses all the way up through
tall buildings which could delay fire-fighting
operations or create a hazard during
evacuation.
. The dry riser installation typically consists of 1 no breeching inlet
installed at entry or ground level to allow easy access for fire brigade
connection.

. A ‘dry rising’ main is installed from ground level to feed various floor
levels above and or lower ground. Landing valves are installed at every
level in cabinets or exposed.

. If your building is between 18m and 60m then dry riser installation could
be the most effective method of ensuring you have an adequate water
supply in the event of fire.
Breeching Inlet are installed
outside the building or any
easily accessible area in the
building for fire brigade
personnel to access the inlet.
This inlet is used by the fire
brigade personnel to access
water. It is normally dry but is
used to pump water by charging 2 WAY BREECHING INLET
using many fire fighting
equipment. 4 WAY BREECHING INLET

Cabinets have a lock and key with each, the front window is
a wired glass window fixed with glazing rubber.
SPRING LOCK , 6mm WIRE GLASS
An air release valve is installed
at top of riser to permit all air
in the pipe work to be released
as water is pumped into the
pipe work. The valve will close
automatically under water
pressure.
A landing valve should be installed at
each floor level on the rising mains. The
landing valves provided at each level
should not exceed 750mm above from
floor level (Lowest point).

A fire fighting landing valve is a core part of the

hose system that acts as a manual stop valve
giving you complete control over your fire
fighting system.

By rotating the landing valve handle anti-

clockwise, you can simply activate the water
flux in the fire fighting system.
