Earth Systems Overview for K-12 Training

This document provides information from a teacher training seminar on the K to 12 Basic Education Program. It includes topics on wordles, group activities, lessons on earth systems. It describes the four main spheres that make up the Earth system - the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. It discusses the layers of the atmosphere and details the composition and structure of the crust, mantle and core that make up the solid Earth.

EARTH
SYSTEMS
SYSTEM - A set of interconnected components that are
interacting to form a unified whole.
EXAMPLE of a system - ECOSYSTEM.
(Organisms are interrelated and interacting)
Earth as a System

 Earthis a dynamic body with many

separate but highly interacting parts or
spheres
 Earthsystem science studies Earth as a
system composed of numerous parts, or
subsystems
The Earth system is essentially a CLOSED SYSTEM.

A closed system is a system in which

there is only an exchange of heat or
energy and no exchange of matter.

The Earth receives energy from the sun and

returns some of this energy to space.
 Absorbing and reflecting the
heat radiated by the earth,
these gases act somewhat like
the glass in a greenhouse and
are thus known as greenhouse
gases.

All life on earth relies on the greenhouse

effect. Without it, the average surface
temperature of the planet would be about
18 oC and ice would cover earth from pole
to pole.
THE EARTH SUBSYSTEMS
Biosphere Hydrosphere

Geosphere Atmosphere
Earth’s Spheres
 Hydrosphere
 Ocean – the most prominent feature of the hydrosphere
 Nearly 70 percent of Earth’s surface
 3% is fresh water, 2/3 in the form of ice, 1/3 streams, lakes, ground water
Hydrosphere
Layers of the
Atmosphere
The four layers of the atmosphere
include:
1. the troposphere, where we
live;
2. the stratosphere, which
contains the ozone layer;
3. the mesosphere, where
meteors burn; and
4. the thermosphere, where
satellites orbit Earth.
The Troposphere
The Stratosphere
The Mesosphere
The Thermosphere
Biosphere

Includes all life

forms on Earth

It covers all ecosystems—from the soil to the

rainforest, from mangroves to coral reefs,
and from the plankton-rich ocean surface to the
deep sea.
Geosphere

 Solid Earth
 Based on compositional differences, it consists of the crust, mantle, and core
 Divisions of the outer portion are based on how materials behave
Layer Relative Position Density Composition
Crust Outermost layer; thinnest Least dense layer overall; Solid Rock – mostly silicon
under the ocean, thickest Oceanic crust (basalt) is and oxygen
under continents; crust more dense than Oceanic crust – basalt;
and top of mantle called continental crust (granite) Continental crust – granite
the lithosphere

Mantle Middle layer, thickest Density increases with Hot softened rock;
layer; top portion called depth because of contains iron and
the asthenosphere increasing pressure magnesium

Core Inner layer, consists of Heaviest material; most Mostly iron and nickel;
two parts – outer core and dense layer outer core – slow flowing
inner core liquid, inner core, solid
The Crust
 Outer layer
 5-100 km thick
 Made of light minerals such as
silicon and aluminum
 2 types of crust
 Oceanic (very dense, made of
basalt)
 Continental (less dense, made of
granite)
Oceanic and Continental Crust

 Oceanic Crust is thin but very dense.

The Crust
•The outermost “skin” of Earth with variable thickness.
–•The Mohorovičić discontinuity or “Moho” is the lower
boundary.
–Separates the crust from the upper mantle.
–Discovered in 1909 by Andrija Mohorovicic. .
The Mantle
 Middle layer, thickest layer;
top portion called the
asthenosphere
 Very thick layer
 Where lava comes from
The Core

 Made mostly of iron, very heavy mineral

 1/3 of the earth’s mass
 Very hot
 Inner core is solid
 Outer core is liquid
STRUCTURE OF EARTH

OUTER CORE

The third layer is outer core. The outer core is a hot

and liquid layer comprising mainly of Nickel and
(liquid) Iron. Therefore it is referred as NiFe Layer.
STRUCTURE OF EARTH

INNER CORE

The fourth layer is inner core.

The inner core is mostly made of solid iron and has little
amounts of nickel.
CRYOSPEHERE

200 words on how man has
altered the atmosphere,
biosphere, hydrosphere,
lithosphere, and as a
consequence, the Earth System
as whole
