Definition
Autopilot is a system used to control the
trajectory of an air craft , marine craft or
space craft without constant manual
control by a human operator being
.required

error
.autopilot can and do fail
A common problem is some kind of
servo failure, either Because of a bad
. motor or a bad connection
A position sensor can also fail , resulting
in a loss of input data to the autopilot
computer
Theory
An autopilot system works by sending signals to the flight control
system. The pilot inputs what type of mode they want, like a
heading hold mode or an altitude hold mode. If they wanted to
hold a specific heading, or direction, they could push a button and
specify something like 3-6-0 for north or 1-8-0 for south. If the
pilot wanted to hold a specific altitude, or the height of the plane,
they could designate that as well.
More sophisticated autoflight systems can actually maintain a
navigational course. Similar to a GPS device you may use when
driving a car, a pilot could program a GPS to maintain a specific
course and the autoflight system would take the desired turns to
get from point A to point B.
Advantages
1-Increases passenger comfort;
2-Improved flight path control and reduced weather
minima
reduces workload, frees attentional resources to focus-3
on other tasks but the need to ‘manage’ the automation
.
disadvantage
Autonomous vehicles have difficulty operating in-1
certain types of weather. Heavy rain interferes with roof-
mounted laser sensors, and snow can interfere with
cameras
Reading road signs is challenging for a robot. GPS-2
and other technologies might not register obstacles like
potholes, recent changes in road conditions, and newly
posted signs
