Introduction to IRIS Recognition
A biometric system refers to automatic recognition
of an individual based on their physiological and
behavioral characteristics.
The IRIS is the part of the eye that is colored.
It is responsible for controlling the amount of
light entering the eye.
IRIS is a form of biometric technology in the
same category as face recognition and
fingerprinting.
Iris recognition is an automated method of
biometric identification.
Introduction to IRIS cont’d …
Iris recognition is exceptional in this regard, enabling the
avoidance of "collisions" (False Matches) even in cross-
comparisons across massive populations.
They also state that iris scans are quicker and more reliable
than fingerprint scans since.
It is easier for an individual to obscure or alter their fingers
than it is to alter their eyes.
How IRIS recognition Works
Image Acquisition deals with capturing of a high quality image of the iris.
Iris localization is a process to isolate the iris region from the rest of the
acquired image.
Threat Posed by Iris Recognition
The biggest threat of iris scanning is the danger of a national database that
can track people covertly, at a distance, or in motion, without their
knowledge or consent.
The list of the threats are:
User/Capture threat
Template storage threat
Comparison threat during verification
Portal Threat
Threat to all Hardware and Software Components
Threat to all Connections(including Network threat)
Features of Iris Recognition
Highly accurate and fast
Remains unchanged throughout life.
Possible to distinguish twins
As long as the eyes are exposed, iris recognition can be used even when the
subject is wearing a hat, mask, eyeglasses, or gloves.
Because of using an infrared camera, recognition is available even at night
or in the dark.
Current trends & focus of IRIS recognition
Currently the technology is used in:
Airports
Government agencies
Prisons
Research laboratories
For the feature uses:
Healthcare industry
Sales transaction
Emigration services
The advantages of IRIS recognition
The following are some of the core advantages of iris
recognition:
This technology is highly scalable and can be used in both large
and small-scale programs
It ensures a higher rate of accuracy in its results.
It is like taking a normal photo
Iris patterns remain stable throughout an individual’s life
It is easy to use the technology
The disadvantages of IRIS recognition
The following are some of the core disadvantages of iris
recognition
Iris scanners are relatively higher in cost compared to other
biometric modalities.
Iris is small in size and can’t be located from a few meters distance
It is hard to perform an iris scanning due to the presence of
reflections.
A lot of memory is required for the data to be stored and later
accessed.
The End!
