Lab Equipment

Building material testing labs provide important services for construction material manufacturers and the construction industry. They allow manufacturers to test materials to ensure quality and safety, acquire necessary certifications, and do so in a cost-effective way without requiring large in-house testing investments. Testing labs utilize specialized equipment and expert procedures to accurately evaluate material properties like strength, hardness, and permeability according to regulatory standards. Common testing equipment includes ovens, sieves, compaction molds, and devices for determining attributes like slump, abrasion value, and ductility.

BASIC TESTING

BASIC
EQUIPMENT
TESTING
EQUIPMENT
Materials like concrete, asphalt and
bitumen are used for civil engineeering
applications all over the world. Due to
their widespread use, test equipment
has been developed specifically to cater
for them. Specially designed
instruments test for properties such as
hardness, moisture content, cure
status, permeability as well as
mechanical properties.
The Importance of a Building Material
Testing Lab
The quality of building material used to construct
any kind of structure plays a determining role in
maintaining its durability. High quality building
material ensures safety of the building and
enhances its resistance against adverse climatic
changes. Therefore, testing of building material,
prior to its usage in construction, becomes of grave
importance for construction material
manufacturers.
However, testing of building material is not
a job that can be undertaken in a simple
fashion. The building material has to go
through a rigorous quality check procedure
that is only possible in specialized facilities.
This is where building material testing labs
make their way into the frame. The
following section highlights the importance
of these labs.
Why there is a Need for Building Material
Testing Laboratory
[Link] Certifications
Building material manufacturers require
certifications from regulatory bodies in order to
bring their product into the market for sale.
Construction material testing labs provide
manufacturers a platform to conduct quick,
transparent and authentic checking procedures
that allows them to acquire certifications from
concerned authorities.
[Link] the Quality of Product
Manufacturing building material requires
quality and strength, since a bad quality
building material can prove to be fairly life-
threatening. This prompts the
manufacturers to test the quality of building
material to ensure it is safe for use and will
ensure a strong structure for many years to
come. Testing labs come across as great help
in this regard.
[Link]-Effective
Putting in place an entire set-up for testing
of building material can turn out to be
capital-intensive. In-house testing of
building material can cause you a severe
financial setback. Testing labs on the other
hand do the job for you, after paying a
reasonable sum without requiring you to
invest in a testing apparatus and other
equipment.
[Link] Testing Procedures
Building material testing labs bear years of
industry experience and are ideally suited for the
job. They leverage the power of technology and are
experts at blending innovation with expertise that
allows them to deliver results in the quickest
turnaround time possible with high level of
accuracy and transparency. Furthermore, testing
labs operate in accordance with the guidelines
stipulated by governing authorities that is another
great advantage of acquiring services of these labs.
SOME BASIC TESTING
EQUIPMENT
MECHANICAL SPLITTER-This methods covers for
the reduction of large samples of aggregate to the
appropriate size for testing.
SIEVE- to assess the particle size distribution
of a granular material.
COMPACTION MOLD AND RAMMER-
used in laboratory compaction of soil
CBR MACHINE-It is the ratio of force
per unit area required to penetrate a soil
mass with standard circular piston at the
rate of 1.25 mm/min. to that required for the
corresponding penetration of a standard
material. The (CBR Test) is a penetration
test developed for evaluating the bearing
capacity of subgrade soil for design of
flexible pavement.
Abrasion Machine-This test helps to
determine the abrasion value of coarse aggregates
MECHANICAL OVEN-A chamber or
enclosed compartment for heating.
LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE
Used to determine the moisture content
at which clay soils pass from a plastic to a
liquid state

A mechanical device consisting of a brass

cup suspended from a carriage designed
to control its drop onto a hard rubber
base.
PLASTIC LIMIT DEVICE-The moisture
content at the boundary between semi-
solid and plastic states.
FDT APPARATUS-(sand cone
method)This method of test is intended for
determining the in-place density of soils. The
apparatus described herein is restricted to the
tests in soils containing particles not larger than
2” in diameter.
MOTOR MIXER-an electrically driven
mechanical mixer of the type equipped with
paddle and mixing bowl
COMPRESSION MACHINE
SLUMP CONE-determination of
slump of hydraulic-cement concrete
CONCRETE CORING MACHINE
Autoclave apparatus-soundness test a
specimen of hardened cement paste is boiled for
a fixed time so that any tendency to expand is
speeded up and can be detected. Soundness
means the ability to resist volume expansion.
DUCTILITY APPARATUS-The ductility test
gives a measure of adhesive property of bitumen and
its ability to stretch.
MARSHALL STABILITY- is the
resistance to plastic flow of cylindrical
specimens of a bituminous mixture loaded
on the lateral surface.
PENETROMETER-Penetration value
is a measure of hardness or consistency
of bituminous material.
EXTRACTOR-determine the
bitumen content
