BRIEF HISTORY OF TAEKWONDO
- The name Taekwondo is derived from the Korean word :
“Tae” meaning foot
“Kwon” meaning fist
“Do” meaning way of
- The name Taekwondo has only been used since 1955 while the art roots
began 2,300 years ago in Korea.

The three kingdoms
- During the 6th century A.D. what we call now the Korean peninsula was
divided in three kingdoms: Koguryo, Paekje and Silla
KOGURYO( 37 B.C – 668
A.D)largest kingdom.
- The
PAEKJE( 18 B.C – 600 A.D)
- Situated along the Han river and in southwestern korea.
SILLA( 57 B.C – 936 A.D)
-The last and the smallest kingdom and located on southeastern peninsula.

-The 24th king of , CHIN HEUNG, formed a group of warriors, which were
called the HwaRang.
- HwaRang also studied unharmed form of combat called : SooBak
- SooBak the primitive form of foot fighting , using some hand but mostly
foot technique.
- The code of ethics and wit their skills in fighting the HwaRang became
HwaRangDo, which means :” the way of flower of manhood.

KORYO DYNASTY (918 A.D- 1392)
-The KORYO DYNASTY was a time for growth and development in the
martial arts. One such style was Tae Kyon.
-Tae Kyon and SooBakgi contest where held at annual festivals given by the
king.
YI DYNASTY ( 1392 A.D -
1910)to the martial arts when king Jong ordered a manual of

- Within korea there were five major martial art academies or Kwans.

Chungdo Kwan
Songmu Kwan
- The way of teaching and employing many of the techniques varied as much
as the school s and in 1946 an attempt was made to unify “Dojangs” and
standardize instructional methods.

RULES FOR TAEKWONDO DOJANG
1. Bow upon entering and leaving the dojang and also before receiving
instructions from your master.
2. Always obey and respect your masters and high ranked students by bowing
down within the dojang area.
3. Arrive in class on time.
4. Address your master and Instructors by their last name.
5. Keep your dubok clean and presentable.
6. Students with long hair should tie their hair up.

RULES FOR TAEKWONDO DOJANG
7. Line up according to your ranking from left to right and front rowto the back.
8. Students should not enter nor leave the class without obtaining permission
from the master or instructor.
9. To prevent injuries, jewelry are not to be worn during training.
[Link], Alcohol , tabacco , chewing gum, loud conversation, negative behavior
and foul language are strictly prohibited.

RULES FOR TAEKWONDO DOJANG
11. Never forget that you learn Taekwondo for defensive purposes and to offend
or bully anyone .
12. Never use Taekwondo outside the dojang, unless in self-defense or in
defense of someone weaker.
13. Remember the first rule of self-defense is to avoid conflict whenever
possible.
