Understanding Disaster Management

The document discusses different types of natural disasters like floods, storms, tsunamis, earthquakes and cyclones. It describes the causes and mitigation strategies for these disasters, including structural measures like dams and reservoirs, management approaches, and public awareness campaigns. The document also outlines methods to prepare for, survive, and recover from earthquakes and tsunamis through securing spaces, creating disaster plans, and following recovery protocols.

Meaning
Disaster Management can be defined as
the organization and management of
resources and responsibilities for dealing
with all humanitarian aspects of
emergencies, in particular
preparedness, response and recovery in
order to lessen the impact of disasters.
Natural(????) Disasters
• Flood
• Storms
• Tsunami
• Earthquakes
• Cyclones
Causes for flood & Landslide
• Heavy and/or prolonged rain
• Deforestation
• Quarrying/ Rock Mining
• Bad agricultural practices such as slash
and burn agriculture
Prevention/Mitigation for Flood
Vegetative
measures Structural measures Management measures
Preserving Retaining water – Integrated river basin
vegetation, grasses reservoirs, dams, approach
and trees floodplains

Diverting water – levels. Public awareness,

participation and
insurance

Public awareness,
participation and insurance

Constructing piles & Land use zoning & risk

retention walls assessment

Improving surface & Flood forecasting and

subsurface drainage warning systems

  Rock-fall protection
Causes for Storms/Cyclone
• Wind piles up the water
• Low air pressure also plays a role
• The shape of the coastline makes
a difference
• The shape of the seafloor
matters, too
• Direction and speed of wind
Methods of mitigation
• Risk and vulnerability study
• Research & technological transfer
• Awareness program and training
• Coordination between institutions
– NDMC – National Disaster Management Centre
– Hospitals
– Engineers
– Department of environmental research
– NGT – National Green Tribunal
Causes for Earthquake & Tsunami
• The tectonic plates are always slowly
moving, but they get stuck at their edges
due to friction. When the stress on the
edge overcomes the friction, there is an
earthquake that releases energy in waves
that travel through the earth's crust and
cause the shaking that we feel.

Mitigation methods
• PREPARE before • SURVIVE during
an earthquake or an earthquake:
tsunami: – Drop, cover, and
– Secure your space hold on
– Create a plan – Check for injuries
– Prepare disaster and damage
kits • RECOVER after
– Strengthen your an earthquake or
home tsunami:
– Follow your plan

– Committee on Trade and
Environment (CTE)

Sanitary Measures
