Chapter 1
Functions
Objective:
At the end of the lesson, you are able to:
1. identify functions, relations, ordered pairs,
domain, and range;
2. determine whether the given graphs and set of
ordered pairs is a function or not;
3. representing real-life situations on functions and
piecewise function
Relations and Functions
Domain is the set of first coordinates.
Range is the set of second coordinates.
{ (1,-1) (2,-3) (0,5) (-1,3) (4,-5)}
Relations and Functions
Relation is a set of ordered pair.
(x, y)
Function is a relation in which each
element of the domain corresponds
to exactly one element of the range.
Relations and Functions
Relation is a set of ordered pair.
(x, y)
{ (-2,-1) (-1,-3) (0,2) (1,3) (2,-5)}
{ (-3,-1) (2,-3) (0,2) (5,3) (2,-4)}
Relations and Functions
Function is a relation in which each
element of the domain corresponds
to exactly one element of the range.
{ (-2,-1) (-1,-3) (0,2) (1,3) (2,-5)}
{ (3,-4) (-1,-3) (0,2) (1,3) (2,-5)}
Exercise:
Which of following relations are functions?
a. { (0,0) (1,1) (1,2) (2,4) (3,5)}
b. { (1, 5) (2, 4) (3,5) (4,4) (5,-5)}
c. { (-2,3) (-1,2) (0,1) (1,4) (2,5)}
d. { (0,10) (1,9) (2,8) (3,7) (4,6)}
Relations and Functions
Using Tables:
x -3 -2 -1 0 1
y 9 4 1 0 1
x -5 3 0 3 2
y 4 5 6 7 8
x 1 2 3 4 5
y 11 12 13 14 15
Relations and Functions
Using Mapping:
Two conditions:
a. All elements in the first set are assigned.
b. No element in the first set are assigned
to more than one element in the second
set.

Evaluation of Functions
Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in
the function, in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing the result.
To denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a in
the domain of f, we write f(a).
Evaluation of Functions
Examples:
Evaluate where x= 1.5
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=2 𝑥 +1
𝑓 ( 1.5 )=2(1.5)+1
𝑓 ( 1.5 )=3+1
𝑓 ( 1.5 )=3+1
Evaluation of Functions
Examples:
Evaluate where x= -2
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=𝑥 2 −4 𝑥 +5
2
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=(− 2) − 4 (−2)+5
𝑓 ( 𝑥 ) = 4 +8 +5
𝑓 ( 1.5 ) =17
