Community Engagement Playbook

for Youth Leaders

Welcome
At Digital Tayo, we believe that a better digital world starts with us and that the youth like you have a powerful
role to play.

We have developed a playbook that can allow you to better engage with and advocate for the issues you care
about, both offline and online. We have designed the playbook that is easy-to-use, and applicable to all types of
youth — whether you want to use it in school, with your organizations, with your barkada, or just by yourself.

We have also included a guide on how you can remember to use this playbook for moments when you need it
most. It is our hope that this playbook helps you and that you find ways to make it your own as you spark positive
change within your communities.

PHASE 1

Setting Direction
for Taking Action
Before we act, it is important to figure out what we want to work towards solving.
This phase is about helping you learn about your community’s (neighborhood or
organization’s) priority needs and then deciding which ones might be best to work
on.

PLAY 01. How can I identify and prioritize my community’s needs?

7
STEP How can I identify and prioritize my
1 community’s needs? PLAY 01.

List them here:

Determine the needs your community has
through these 2 methods:

1. INDIVIDUAL CONTEMPLATION

Read the news. Ask yourself, “Which of these stories are issues also experienced
by people in my community?”

2. COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Look for 5 people in your community. Ask them the following questions:
• “If you were given the chance to change one thing in the community, what
would it be and why?”
• “If you were to choose the top 3 causes that would be most helpful for you
and your community, what would it be?”

PHASE 1 8

• People who are interested or are experts on the need

• People who have resources that can help with the need (not limited to

big or small)

UTILIZE THE POWER OF #HASHTAGS

Hashtags can be a powerful way to connect with people in your community
even if you may not be physically able to.
• Try looking up hashtags with your city or barangay’s name and seeing
what others are going through.
• If there are not any yet, start your own local hashtag and invite your
neighbors to share their experiences!

Taking action by sharing

information
Especially with the ever-increasing access to social media, information plays such a
big role in our lives and decisions. This phase is about helping you make relevant,
engaging, and human-centric materials.

Write three things you would like to talk about when it comes
to this commonly discussed need. After that, do this again for
a priority need of your choice. Choose 1 from the ones you listed.

Ask yourself these five questions to make sure the topic

you are choosing is the most strategic:
1. Does this topic make me feel purposeful?
2. Is the topic recent?
3. Is the topic simple and relatable?
4. Will this topic be helpful for my community? How?
5. Will this topic generate motivation and hope within my community?
