I.M. Pei: Architectural Philosophy & Works

I.M. Pei is a Chinese American architect known for modernist designs that combine simple geometric shapes. Some of his most famous works include the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, which features a large glass pyramid surrounded by three smaller pyramids, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, which resembles growing bamboo shoots with its four triangular towers supported by steel columns. Pei also designed the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, which uses limestone and is influenced by Islamic architecture but features modern geometric patterns.

INTRODUCTION
• Ieoh Ming Pei, commonly known
as I. M. Pei, is a Chinese American
architect. He is one of the most
important modern architects,
defining the landscapes of some of
the world’s greatest cities. A
monumental figure in his field and
a laureate of the prestigious
Pritzker Architecture Prize
EDUCATION
• SAINT JOHNS MIDDLE SCHOOL, SHANGAI
• UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. (1935)
• MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT).(1940)
• HARVARD’S GRADUATE SCHOOL OF DESIGN . STUDIED
UNDER WALTER GROPHIUS (1942)
• NATIONAL DEFENSE RESEARCH COMMITTEE
• PEI RETURNED TO HARVARD IN 19944 AND COMPLETED HIS
MASTER IN ARCHITECTURE IN 1946.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
• Pei's style is described as thoroughly modernist, with
significant cubist themes. He is known for combining
traditional architectural elements with progressive
designs based on simple geometric patterns
• Most of his works are composed of primitive shapes,
especially the most basic, the triangle, circle and
square. These shapes are the most powerful formal
elements applied in the significant I.M. Pei buildings.
Each classic Pei building has a clear composition
which can be perceived whole as a powerful icon, or
easily disintegrated into a set of simple geometries.
• The clearest example which demonstrates a bold
combination of all of these three shapes is the
JFK Presidential Library and Museum in
Massachusetts. Each of the most elemental
geometries isolated from I.M. Pei’s masterpieces
shows its spatial energy with a strong statement
of the primitive and perfect form.
• Pei was inspired by the innovative designs of the
new International style, characterized by
simplified form and the use of glass and steel
materials

THE MAIN COURTYARD OF LOUVRE MUSEUM .
• I M PEI UTILISED THE ORIGINAL PLACE ARCHITECTURE AS A
BACKDROP TO HIS POST MODERN ADDITION FEATURING A
GRAND GLASS STRUCTURE.
• IN THIS DESIGN, I. M. PEI ACKNOWLEDGED THE
IMPORTANCE OF THE BASIC FORMS ALL THE WAY BACK TO
THE ANCIENT TIMES. M. PEI BELIEVED THAT EVERY
CENTURY SHOULD HAVE AN PROMINENT SYMBOL WITHIN
THE LOUVRE AS EVERY CENTURY IS REPRESENTED IN THE
MUSEUM'S ENCYCLOPAEDIC ART COLLECTION. THE GLASS
PYRAMID SUGGESTS BOTH HISTORY AND MODERNISM
SIMULTANEOUSLY FOR I. M. PEI.
