B4- PERSONNEL IN SPORT DEVELOPMENT

• Sport development officers (sport specific/non-sport specific)


• Sport specific job roles (coaches, leaders and managers)

Sport development officers
SDO’s organise projects and training to encourage people to take part
in sport and have a healthier lifestyle.
• sports specific -linked to particular sports and help to make sure that there
are opportunities for people to participate and compete at the appropriate
level. They form a link with county, regional and national teams.
• non-sports specific -implementing social policy and encouraging greater
numbers of people to take part in all aspects of sport. They may work with
non-sports partners, developing specialist projects for disengaged groups,
such as school truants and young offenders. Along with other bodies, they
play an important role in the regeneration of a community.

Sport specific coaches, leaders and managers

• Coach -an experienced person, who supports a learner or client in


achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training
and guidance
• Leaders- influence those around them and improve performance. These
may include captains of teams. Their job is to influence and motivate a
team
• Managers- responsible for managing athletes and organizations, key role
is to liaise with coaching staff, ensure players are aware of teams needed.

Research task- Find a job opportunity as a coach, leader or manager in

Community volunteers
Community volunteers- a group of individuals from a community who
partake in social, charitable and environmental activities on
a voluntary basis.
• Sport specific- focus on fundraising or promoting one sport.
• Non-sport specific- focus on helping communities get more active
through sport.

Research task- Find a sport specific and a non-sport specific


volunteering opportunity in Cardiff.

Youth workers

Youth workers work with young people aged 13-19, encouraging them,


providing them with support and helping them to achieve their potential.
The primary focus of youth work is on the personal, social, cultural and
educational development of young people in the UK.

information about one activity that is currently going on to PADLET.
Health improvement officers

Health improvement officers - make people aware of the importance of


good health. They run campaigns and produce materials to encourage
people to change to a healthier lifestyle.

Enabling and facilitating
• A role and responsibility with sport development is to enable (motivate)
and facilitate (make something easier) sport.
• This would involve working with the local community to help them to
become more active.
• They would establish new programmes (initiatives) to meet the local
objectives.
• Create links between clubs, organisations and key agencies in local sport
recreation.
• They would assist sports clubs and groups in applying for funding.

In what specific ways could a sports development personnel
enable and facilitate sport in your area?
Direct Delivery

• A role within sport development is to be involved in the direct delivery of


sport and physical activity.
• This could be as a coach or a volunteer.
• A local example of this would be a role within Essex School Sports
Coaching who offer sports coaching to schools, they supply qualified
coaches in a variety of sports.
• ESSC increase participation by providing links to sports clubs outside of
school.
STRATEGIC and advisory

Working within certain sport development roles means you would have responsibility to strategically
ensure the following, this will involve advising the relevant organisations on the best approach:

• Education of coaches
• Provision and improvement of sport facilities
• Recruitment of participants (including Community Outreach and Talent Identification Programs)
• Organisation of events
• Nurturing of volunteerism (including Referees, Coaches, Administrators and Other Helpers)
• Openness in political and administrative structure
• Knowledge management
• Development of self-funding programs
• Athlete development programs
• Forming partnerships with other sports and organisation
OPERATIONAL

Working within sport development may involve some operational duties.


This can include helping organisations that has never run a sports
development campaign before.

PARTICIPATION

• Sport development roles would involve the responsibility to create


initiatives to increase numbers within a sport or activity within the
community.

CHILD PROTECTION

Child safeguarding in sport and in sport & development is a set of actions that help to
ensure all children participating in sport have a positive experience.
Anyone working within Sport Development will need to understand how to protect
children and therefore will need to complete child protection training, within this training
the following will be learnt:
• identify what is meant by child abuse and safeguarding
• identify the relevant legislation and guidance that provides the framework for
safeguarding and protecting young people
• describe the types, signs and indicators of abuse and neglect
• understand how to respond to concerns about the safety and welfare of children and
know who to report to
• understand the principles of good recording practice.
