published by Schirmer Mosel. O
• His latest book entitled Nick
Knight was published by Harper N
Collins in 2009 .
• The idea behind Knight's photos isn't only to attract consumer's attention
to his client's clothes; he also has a very meaningful philosophy behind
his artwork. Knight once said, “I don't want my photographs to reflect
P
social change – I want them to cause social change.”

NICK’S WORKS: T
H
• The picture comes from early in the
series of clothing catalogues Nick Knight E
made for Yohji Yamamoto .The model was
Sarah Wingate .
• The elements of this photograph are R
controlled with a curious mix of indulgent
austerity, and it remains seductive long E
after the clothes it was made to sell have
passed into the archive. D
• Knight flirted between flat representation
and three dimensional: almost all of the
girl, her cap, her long coat, most of her B
shoes are in inky black silhouette.
U
• The bustle that flares out behind her is
glittery translucent pink net, and every THE RED BUSTLE, 1986 S
pleat catches its full complement of
zinging highlights and dark shadows. T
• The little highlight on the heel is important: L
that’s where the flat blankness finally begin
to curve to relief. E
• This is one of the photos taken by Nick Knight
of Caitin Stickels who suffers from
C
chromosomal disorder and Cat Eye Syndrome. A
• Nick Knight used this disorder to his advantage I
to present her in such an elegant way whilst
enhancing her features. T
• The way in which the lighting is constructed
I
really sets apart immediately where your eyes
choose to focus. An example of this is the how
N
the jewellery she’s wearing bright in terms of
the colour and the glow . Furthermore, bright
coloured hair with blue eye shadow and bright S
lipstick.
T
• The way in which the image has been created
her body presents itself with qualities of a
I
painting almost. C
• The use of contract and blacks helps makes CAITIN STICKELS, 2017 K
the portrait powerful.
E
• The background used is once again consistent
with the colours of her tattoo and the L
garments worn.
S
• Nick Knight’s photographs are taken in
studio. This is because he likes to have A
natural backgrounds so he focus is on the L
models.
• I believe Knight’s choice of having a E
serious mood in each photograph is to X
make viewers think of a deeper meaning A
of the photograph.
• In both of these pictures I think that N
knight was trying to achieve a thoughtful D
mood.
• In each picture there is at least one colour
E
that is dominated in the photographs. R
• In the top picture the man’s red eyes
stands out. This may convey a dark and
evil side to him. M
• Parts such as blue ink and red eyes make C
the photograph eye catching and the ALEXANDER McQUEEN
facial point. Q
-1998
• The mood is shown very clearly by looking U
at the facial expression of the model and
how they are positioned. E
• The braid is extra detail so the photograph E
is not seen as plain.
N
• The dominate colour in the second picture is N
blue. This relates to water that is washing out
her white pure dress.
A
• This because the Nick Knight has used make- O
up to show realistic depiction.
• At the bottom of the last photograph shown M
there is a tough texture showing that there is
not only happiness in the photograph, but
I
there is also darkness.
• The genre of this photograph is seen as
fashion. This is because of the dress and the C
model ‘Naomi Campbell’.
• The tone of both of the photographs is a
A
very light tone and high contrast. This is M
because it makes the photograph more
engaging and stands out. NAOMI CAMPBELL P
• Both photos have high key lighting, knight B
has made the photographs bolder and
brighter to focus on pacific points of the E
photos.
