under the protection of the Governent, On the same date, he left
Hong Kong together with his sister Lucia. They carried a safe-

manila against Jose Rizal and his followers “for anti-religious and
anti-patriotic agitation”
Dangerous Homecoming
He arrived in Manila on June 26, 1892.
He immediately went to Malacañang
Palace to seek and audience with
Governor-General Despujol but he was
advised to come back at 7:00 in the
evening.

Eulogio Despujol y Dusay served as the

Spanish Governor-General of the
Philippines between 1891 and 1893.
Alfonso XII granted him the nobiliary title
of Count of Caspe after his win in the
battle that took place in the town of the
same name during the Third Carlist War.
After initial interview of the governor-general, he visited some of his friends.
He was probably unaware that spies were following him, for friends he
visited were raided after he left them, some were caught with a possession
of copies of his novels.

He had other interview with the governor-general to seek pardon for his
family and requested that the penalty for exile be lifted, but was denied,
although there was hope for his sisters. It was during the interview on June
30, where Rizal discussed the idea about the British North Borneo
Colonization Project – it was a failure. The governor-general was against it.
British North Borneo Colonization Project
The colonization project of Rizal in
Sabah was a response to the
Calamba's land crisis which all started
when Governor-General Terrero
released a directive for the
investigation of the friar estates to
resolve the agrarian problems on the
collection of land taxes and tenancy.
Rizal planned to move the landless
Filipino families to North Borneo
(Sabah), rich British owned island and
carve out of its virgin wildness a “New
Calamba”.
When he visited the Malacanang Palace to resume his interview it was the
that the governor-general showed him an alleged evidence of subversive
materials found in Lucia’s Pillowcase. They were leaflets, entitled Pobres
Frailes (Poor Friars), a satire against the Dominican Friars who amassed
wealth and fortune contrary to their monastic vows of poverty, written by
Father Jacinto. Rizal tried to prove his innocence by giving the explanation
that the customs authorities inspected their baggage and found nothing but
his reasons were not accepted and he was arrested. The arrest was made
public through the newspaper Gaceta Manila, causing indignation among
Filipino people and disturbance and fear among the members of the newly
established. ‘La Liga Filipina’.
Rizal was sentenced to an exile to Dapitan. He was
brought under heavy guard to the streamer Cebu, which
brought him to his destination on July 17, 1892.
An Aborted Duel
Jose Rizal almost had a duel with a French businessman,(Mr.
Juan Lardel) over a purchased of logs from him. Some
according to Lardet, were of substandard quality. Lardet
confided to Antonio Miranda, a friend of Rizal. (Lardet stated that
"If Jose Rizal was a truthful man, he would have told him that
the lumber were bad".' Jose Rizal flared up in anger and
challenged the Frenchman to a duel. The commandant
however, advised Lardet that he would have no chance to win,
for Jose Rizal was a pistol expert. Lardet followed the advice
and a letter to Jose Rizal was handed apologize for his mistake.
Jose Rizal accepted the apology and t he became friends again.
A Spy in their Midst
Jose Rizal was disturbed when he discovered that a certain "Pablo Mercado)
who introduced himself as a relative was a spy. He arrived on the night of
November 3, 1893, introduced himself and showed a photo of Jose Rizal and
a pair of buttons with initials P•M• to support his claims. During conversations,
he offered his services as a confidential courier of his letters and writings for
his compatriots, which made Rizal doubtful of his identity. He allowed the
impostor to stay on that night and sent him on his way the following day but he
found out that he was still in Dapitan and telling everyone that he was a
relative of Rizal. He reported it to authorities. Captain Carcinero ordered his
arrest and investigation. It was disclosed that he was sent by the Recollect
friars to gather evidences that would implicate him in the revolutionary
movement. Rizal was surprised later when he found out that the investigation
stopped and the impostor was released. The documents were forwarded to
the Governor-General Blanco and were held confidential.
