KINDS OF MUSIC

What is music?
Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce
a composition through the elements of melody,
harmony, rhythm, and timbre.
There are many kinds of music like blues , jazz,
classical music , pop, soul and etc. lets talk about them
one by one.
BLUES
• Different from other forms of music, blues was only recorded
by memory and passed down through generations through
live performances. The blues began in the North Mississippi
Delta post Civil War times. It was heavily influenced by
African roots, field hollers, ballads, church music and
rhythmic dance tunes called jump-ups. This eventually
developed into music that was set up in a call-and- response
way so that the singer would sing a line and he would then
respond with his guitar.
BLUES
• The blues, a uniquely American art form, was born on the dusty street corners of the Deep
South in the late 1800s. An evolution of West African music brought to the United States
by slaves, created the blues which was a way for black people in the south to express their
hardships, heartbreaks, religion, passion, and politics that they experienced in their day-to-
day lives. The majority of blues songs were never written down, let alone recorded, but
instead, were passed on from one musician to another and played on a variety of
instruments including a number of stringed instruments, harmonicas, and horns. Once
blues songs began to be officially recorded in the 1920s, the most frequently found
instruments were guitars and pianos. However, the basic 12-bar style and three.-chord
progression have remained the same throughout the years and continue to be key
components of the blues.
Typical elements of the blue include rhythmic, lyrical, instrumental, and structural aspects.
Within the blues, drums are not solely used to keep the beat, but also to help maintain a
feeling of tension throughout the song by placing a certain emphasis on the off-beat.
JAZZ MUSIC
• The origin of this famous genre of music has a long history. It mainly lies
with African American musicians. Unlike today where Jazz songs are written
down, the early songs were not written down but were passed orally from
one musician to the other. In Africa for instance, the culture and life remains
concentrated and centered around the village. Everyone participates in his or
her own way and the dances and songs composed have specific uses like in
occasions such as deaths, births and other rites of passage (Jonas). Some
traditional aspects related to the Jazz from an African context is that the
music involves the whole body, swaying to the beat, handclapping among
others. The singing was in most cases led by a soloist and the group replied
in harmony. Like it is the case with traditional African music, rhythm is the
heart of jazz
JAZZ MUSIC
• It evolved in Harlem New York City in the 1920’s (Jonas 1998). This dance is
considered a jazz music as the movements resemble those of the jazz. It was
indeed a fusion of several dances that preceded it. At most times, it is classified
under jazz dance.
Improvisation has had great effects on the development of jazz. It brought out
several changes on jazz. One of them is where each dance started to be connected
to each other hand-to-hand. Improvisation also made it a social culture and more
people got involved in it. It thus got more audience. Other than this, improvisation
contributed to it being referred to as street dance.
The Harlem renaissance was a time of cultural celebration. The end of bondage
made people celebrate (Jonas). Through these celebrations form oppression, dance
was invented. This dance spread to various places where people used it to
celebrate for other occasions. This was facilitated by migration. For instance, the
African Americans migrated in large numbers. This way, they spread the dance.
CLASSICAL MUSIC
• Do you know about the birth of classical music and who are Bach,
Mozart and Vivaldi? If you don’t know, it’s time to enhance your
knowledge of classical music. Classical music isn’t very popular in
this generation, but people should consider it. Classical music is art
music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western music, including
both liturgical and secular music. Classical music is very calming, and
when you learn about it can affect your body. Today, I want to tell you
about how classical music affects your IQ and memory, the famous
composers of the classical era, and the history of classical music. The
era of classical music is associated with the time periods 1750 to
1820.
Effects of CLASSICAL MUSIC
• If a pregnant woman listens to classical music, she speeds up the development of her
baby’s brain. In other studies, newborn babies and young children, who listened to
classical music regularly, experienced rapid development and better learning abilities.
The power of classical music has an intriguing effect on memory. Baroque’s and
Mozart’s music, which have a 60 beat per minute beat pattern, activate the left and right
sides of brain. The simultaneous stimulation of the left and right sides of the brain
maximizes retention of information and learning abilities. The information being studied
activates the left side of the brain while the music activates the right side. Also, activities
which engage both sides of the brain at the same time, such as playing an instrument, or
singing, causes the brain to be more capable of processing information. Classical music
can help not only to unwind after a stressful day at work, but it could also lower heart
rate, blood pressure, and improve heart rate variability. Scientists have proved that
classical music can improve health, decrease pain and, accelerate healing.
POP MUSIC
• Music currently defined as popular music or pop, evolved in the American society
many decades ago. Popular music is a wide-ranging combination of many different
styles of music such as jazz, country, rock and roll, rap, and even hip-hop. In
today’s society, people perceive pop music as cool, pleasant-sounding, and a type
music that has the means of changing the American way of life. This unique type of
music has played a significant role in shaping our lives. More importantly, it has
brought together people of different ages, diverse ethnic backgrounds, and has
transformed our culture and others for the better. Thus, it is fair to say, pop music
resonates throughout the world, touching people and societies in ways that is
baffling to politicians and government leaders. For this reason, popular music has
helped make the industry a multi-billion dollar a year business. This highly
lucrative business reflects lucidly in all forms of today’s media including film,
television, the internet, etc.
POP MUSIC
• Popular music began with the publication of sheet music. Sheet music,
which transcribed note-for-note many orchestral symphonic scores for
easy reading, sold rapidly throughout America. In the middle to late
19th century, many American homes had a piano for the purpose of
entertainment. This unique piece of equipment at the time served as
entertainment during social gatherings, and for many families, the
instrument was the first that children learned how to play. For those
families who desired to have a musical piano in their homes, but had
no one to play the extraordinary instrument, the invention of player
pianos came forth.
SOUL
• Since the early to mid 1800’s, music has been the most powerful vehicle
of human expression. As the embodiment of love, disapproval, happiness,
pain and experience, mainly life, music speaks to us because it comes
from us. Everyone in the, paradigm of the human experience instinctively
and systematically change the music of the past to represent the realities
of the present. In this century, African American music, more specifically
Soul music, has been the music that has brought to plain view evidences
of our humanities – hope, hurt, joy and passion – in such a way that the
world has no other choice than to feel its power and marvel in its
brilliance. Although the first true pioneers of music can not be traced,
some of the first people to bring the art of music to the for front can.
SOUL
• In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, there were different styles of music
that developed. One of most popular styles was known as the blues. The
blues was a style of music that in a rhythmic matter, told a story of men
and women who had been hurt, abused, depressed or who felt confused
(Kebede 135). As the blues grew, it began to fall in to one of four
categories: country blues, city blues, urban blues and instrumental blues.
Country blues existed in oral tradition as a form of personal expression.
It began its development in the early part of the 1900’s because it was a
difficult period of transition form slavery to freedom. African Americans
used the blues to tell of the adversity, they had experienced and was still
experiencing. Interest in country blues did not start until the mid 1920’s.
