“WOULD

YOU
RATHER”
SITUATION 1.
“UNFAITHFUL FRIEND”
You go out with your husband for dinner at a new restaurant you have
not frequented before. It is in a part of town you rarely visit. You are
shocked to see your friend’s spouse having dinner with a very young,
attractive person. From the way they are behaving, it is obvious they are
more than friends. The couple finish their meal and leave without seeing
you. They behave very affectionately on the way out the door.
Would you rather;
Tell your friend, knowing you probably will not
be believed and that it may ruin your
friendship?
● Say nothing about seeing the couple as it is
none of your business; they may even have
an open relationship?
SITUATION 2.
“TELLING A SECRET”
Your friend tells you that they committed a crime.
They explain that they are having trouble sleeping
at night and feel you are the only one they can
trust with their confession. A few days later, you
read in the paper that someone has been arrested
for your friend’s crime.
Would you rather;
Go to the police and tell them what you
know?
Encourage your friend to confess and warn
him if he does not do so, you will tell?
● Say nothing because you will not betray a
friend’s confidence?
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, learners are expected to;
Define the meaning of moral dilemmas.
Identify the three levels of moral dilemmas.
• Provide examples to the different levels of moral
delimmas.
• To Understand the differences between the three
levels of moral delimmas.
Introduction
Do you remember a time when you had to make a choice and each option
was equally unpleasant? Perhaps you lied, and something terrible
happened, or you were faced with the task of divulging the truth and
being punished for lying. This mess is called a dilemma: a situation that
challenges an agreeable solution. In literature, dilemmas form the central
conflict many protagonists encounter. Many people face all kinds of
dilemmas in life, and the choice they make can have long-lasting
impacts.
MORAL
DILEMMAS
What is Dilemma?
A situation where a
person is forced to
choose between two or
more conflicting actions,
neither of which is
acceptable.
MORAL DILEMMAS
- are situations where
persons, who are called
“Moral Agents” in Ethics are
forced to choose between
two or more conflicting
options, neither of which
resolves the situation in a
morally acceptable manner.
Three conditions that MUST be present in
Moral Dilemmas
1. Theree person or the agent of moral action
is obliged to make decision about which
course of action is best.
2. There must be different courses of action to
choose from.
3. No matter what course of action is taken
some moral principles are always
compromise.
THREE LEVELS OF
MORAL DILEMMAS
1. Individual Moral
Dilemma
2. Organizational Moral
Dilemma
3. Structural Moral
Dilemma
INDIVIDUAL
01 MORAL
DILEMMA
Individual Moral Dilemma
• Judgement is based on self-chosen
principles and moral reasoning is
based on individual rights and
justice .

• is experienced by individuals who

have a hard time to choose the right
action from two or more options. No
matter what choice, the individual
has someone or something will
suffer.
EXAMPLES:
1. Having to choose between
saving your sister who’s
drowning or saving your dog
on fire.
2. Be the donor for kidney
transplant.
3. Fulfilling your promises to
your daughter or helping
someone who needs your
help.
Example:
ORGANIZATIONAL
02 MORAL DILEMMA
Organizational Moral Dilemma
• is a puzzle posed by the dual necessities
of a social organization and members’ self
interest.

• It may exist between personal interests

and organizational welfare or between
group interests and organizational well-
being.

• It occur in business, medical and

public sector.
Example:
A small IT business has recently discovered that
their database servers faced a minor data breach
where the hackers were able to obtain information
regarding the last name of their customers. By law,
the organization will be required to report the data
breach to government security agencies but it
would mean that they will have to pay hefty fines.
Due to this, the business and the employees will
also have to face severe financial consequences.
STRUCTURAL
03 MORAL DILEMMA
Structural Moral Dilemma
•These structural moral dilemmas
pertain to cases involving network
of institutions and operative
theoretical paradigms.

• Any attempt to introduce reform

in society or government.

• Structural dilemma is a conflict of

perspective of sectors , groupings
and institutions that may be
affected by the decision.
Examples:
• Differentiation versus
Integration
• Gap versus overlap
• Lack of clarity versus
lack of creativity
• Flexibility versus strict
adherence to Rules
EXAMPLES:
• Differentiation versus Integration

- The tension between allocating work and coordinating sundry efforts

creates a classic dilemma.

• Gap versus Overlap

- If the responsibility are not clearly assigned, important task may fall
through the cracks.

• Lack of Clarity versus Lack of Creativity

- If employees are unclear about of what they are supposed to be doing,

they often shape their role around personal preferences instead of
organizational goals.
Differences between the three levels of
Moral Dilemmas
INDIVIDUAL – conflict arrives when a person is asked to choose
between two important values for him or her.

ORGANIZATIONAL – encountered by institutions, business, or

organizations in their decision-making process, at this level the
dilemmas that the organizations’ experiences usually affect more
than one person and they can be part of the internal group or part of
an external stakeholder.
STRUCTURAL – affect a network of institutions and operative
theoretical paradigms like universal care, juvenile laws, and
immigration. This level of moral dilemmas can affect a community
and even a society at large.
How would you resolve
Moral Dilemmas?
RESOLVING MORAL DILEMMAS
A moral dilemma can be resolved when someone
makes a choice that is deemed the best
regardless of the situation. Based upon their
morals, a person’s actions can help in solving the
dilemma. However, it is not always true that the
choice made resolves the dilemma as it can hurt
all parties involved.
