Biographical Research

A specific type of qualitative research which uses


stories of individuals and other personal materials to
understand the individual life within its social context
(Roberts 2002)
Constitutes the study of a single life, focusing
primarily upon an individual who in some way is
affiliated with the professional field broadly conceived
(Garry, 1957;Oates,1986
It may also include life history ,oral history , memoir ,
autography, and life narrative ( Roberts, 2002;
Josselson & Lieblich, 1993

Scholarly
Chronicle
 Is the most fundamental type of
biographical research with its focus
on the historical portrayal of an
individual life.
 Often viewed as synonymous with
biography.

Intellectual
biography
 Forsakes the need for basic
chronological structure and develops
a narrative of a life through the
conceptual analysis of the subject’s
motives and beliefs within the world
of ideas.

Writing
 Uses life story whether in the form
of oral history, personal narrative ,
autobiography or biography as a
primary source for the study of
history and culture.

 Devoted to the researcher’s motives
in relation to the biographical
subject and with emphasis upon the
stylistic presentation of the
biographer’s reflections and insights
in relation to the factual account of
the life.

 Represents a dynamic portrayal of a


life without the need for absolute
facticity or a compre­hensive account
from birth to grave.
The Purpose of Biographical Research

The intent of biographical research in its various guises is to


collect and interpret the lives of others as part of human
understanding .
Emphasis the importance of subjective experience within
historical and social contexts .
Illuminate processes by which individuals negotiate both their
identities and their interpretation /engagement with norms.
Facilitates the researcher in capturing , probing and rendering
understandable problematic experience .
