Concept
THE BIRD AND THE SPRING
Benghazi international airport development
The bird
« The Bird » The Voyage
Approaching the Terminal, the first impression is given by the landscaping of the site
evocating a Mediterranean garden.
The garden lies between the curbside and the terminal on both Domestic and International
side.
Shaped as a swallow with its open wings flying over the airport site, the building
gives a dynamic figure to the over all Terminal and a complete view from all areas of the
landscaping through large glazing bays on the landside.
This configuration will reinforce a feeling of comfort for the passenger and will decrease
his stress.

The bird
The building is divided in 3 separated parts: the central body with its tail and the two wings. The
central body will take the main functions on 2 levels Arrival / Departure and the two large wings will
be used to fit all the dedicated passenger areas for both domestic and international traffic. The
passenger at arrival and departure curbside is protected by a canopy, the tail of the bird, overhanging
the viaduct which is an extension of the roof covering the central body.
In order to express the dynamic effect of the building, the boarding area is built in cantilever above
the technical rooms with an inclined glazing façade open to the airside and the runway.
This façade, oriented mainly to the South is designed with horizontal metallic blades which give the
necessary shading protection to the boarding lounge. This façade will offer to the passenger a
panoramic view of the airport activities.

The spring َر ِبيع
The Bird The swallow with its dynamic profile is materialized by
the terminal building.
Forecasting the fertile season, he accompanies the
passenger through his migration.
Settled in Benghazi, The swallow «broods» the airport
function and announces the spring.
Symbol of renewal and prosperity, Spring, is spread
through the terminal, brought along with the swallow.

The spring َر ِبيع
The spring intimates freshness, peace, and calm. This theme aims at decreasing the passengers’ stress and creating a
comfortable and reassuring environment. The colors of the project take as a starting point this concept, evoking
freshness, cheerfulness, the brown to symbolize the ground, the green and red for the vegetation, blue and white for
the sky. These are found in all the elements of the project (walls, floors, ceilings, furnitures).
