Decimal Representation of Rational Numbers

Rational numbers can be represented as decimals in either a terminating or non-terminating repeating form. Terminating decimals have a finite decimal representation from dividing the numerator by the denominator, like 7/8 = 0.875. Non-terminating decimals repeat their pattern indefinitely, like 8/3 = 2.666... The type can be determined by factorizing the denominator - a denominator with prime factors of 2 and/or 5 only will terminate, otherwise it repeats. Both terminating and non-terminating decimals can be converted to fractional form p/q by setting up and solving equations from their decimal expressions.

Decimal representation of rational numbers
 All rational numbers can be represented in decimal form.
 The decimal representation of rational numbers is of two types:
1. Terminating decimal expansion
2. Non terminating repeating decimal expansion
 Let us take two example to see how to represent rational numbers in decimal form
Example 1: Terminating decimal expansion
 Express 7/8 in decimal form:
 As we can see here that when we divide 7 by 8 we
get 0.875 as the quotient.
 Therefore, the decimal form of 7/8 is 0.875
Example 2: Non-terminating repeating decimal
expansion
 Express 8/3 in decimal form.
 As we can see that the division is not ending and this will
continue forever.
 So we represent it as 2. where ¯ means that the digit
will keep repeating.
Decimal expansion of rational numbers
 As we have seen in the above examples that the decimal representation can be
terminating or non-terminating repeating.
 We can always do the division to check if the number is terminating or non-
terminating repeating but there is a simple way to check the same
 This method is discussed in the next slides.
Way to check the decimal expansion
 First of all reduce the rational number to its simplest form.
 Next prime factorise the denominator
 If the prime factorisation is in the form of 2 m.5n, then the decimal expansion will be
terminating.
 If the prime factorisation is not in the form 2 m.5n, then the decimal expansion will
be non-terminating repeating.
Quick Fact

When the prime factorisation of

the denominator is in the form
2m.5n, then the decimal expansion
will terminate after max(m,n)
places.
Conversion of decimal to form where p and q
are integers and q0
 Just like conversion of rational numbers to decimal form, there are two cases in this
also.
1. When the decimal is terminating:
Convert 0.25 in form:
Let x=0.25
100x=25
X==
 Instead of this long method we can simply convert it by writing the whole number
without decimal point in numerator and 100…nth0 in denominator where n is the
number of places after decimal point in the original decimal number.
 Now let us see the conversion of non terminating repeating decimal to p/q form.
 Convert 2.3333…. to p/q form.
Let x=2.3333… ______(i)
Multiply both sides by 10 (Since here only one digit is repeating we will multiply it by
10. If there were 2 digits then we would multiply it by 100 and so on)
10x=23.3333…. ________(ii)
(ii)-(i)
10x-x=23.333… - 2.333…
9x=21
X=
This is how we can convert a non- terminating repeating decimal number to p/q form.
