DEVELOPING EVIDENCE BASED
APPROACH IN PHYSIOTHERAPY
• Evidence based practice is the integration of best research evidence with best available scientific
research, clinical expertise and patient values, which when applied by the practitioners will ultimately
lead to improved patient outcomes.
•
• Evidence can be thought of as coming from three different sources;
• 1. Scientific Research;
• It is the empirical evidence acquired through systematic testing of a hypothesis.
•
• 2. Clinical Expertise; It refers to implicit and explicit knowledge about physiotherapy
•
• &3. Patient’s values and [Link] patients and their caregivers create the most important

• There are five important steps which are used in developing Evidence based
physiotherapy approach
• 1. Formulate an answerable question;By formulating an answerable question you are
able to focus on your efforts specifically on what [Link] questions are usually
triggered by patient encounters which generate questions about the diagnosis , therapy

• 2. Find the best best available evidence;
The step involves identifying search terms which will be found in your
carefully constructed question form step one;
• (i). Seleting resources in which to perform search e.g "PubMed“
• (ii). Formulating an effective search strategy using a combination of MESH
terms and limitations of the results.

• 3. Appraise the evidence ;
• It is an important step to be skilled in critical appraisal a method is used that will answer
these questions.
• What question did the study address?
• What are the results?
• How do the results apply to you practice?
• 4. Implement the evidence;Individual clinical decisions can then be made by combining
the best available evidence with your clinical expertise and your patients' [Link]
clinical decisions should then be implemented into your practice which can then be
justified as evidence based.
