Loopback Testing Guide & Procedures

This document provides information about loopback testing, including: - Loopback testing involves sending a signal from a device and receiving it back to determine if the device is working properly or locate a failing node. - There are hardware and software types of loopbacks that can isolate faults in transmission paths. - Procedures are outlined for enabling and disabling loopback functions on interfaces for testing purposes. - Notes cover best practices like only running loopbacks during scheduled windows to avoid impacting live traffic.

Loopback Testing Module

Neil Leander A. de Dios/NMP-SME

What is Looptesting?
• a test in which a signal in sent from a communications device and returned (looped
back) to it as a way to determine whether the device is working right or as a way to
pin down a failing node in a network.
• Maintenance function to help you isolate faults in a Transmission path
Loopback Classification:

Type Description
Hardware Connect the transmit and receive ends with a cable to form a loop so that the device receives the
loopback signals sent by itself.
Software loopback Remote loopback (external loopback)
The local interface does not forward packets received from the remote interface based on their
destination addresses. Instead, it sends the packets back to the remote interface.
Local loopback (internal loopback)
Packets sent from an interface are sent back to the local device.
Other Terms of Loop testing
• Terminal Loopback – Loop Facing Network (Fiber). Equivalent to
Loopback Local
• Facility Loopback – Loop Facing Customer Port. Equivalent to
Loopback Remote
• Inloop – For circuits riding via WDM/SDH. This is equivalent to
Loopback Local/Terminal Loopback since this is Facing WDM Network
(Fiber)
• Outloop – For circuits riding via WDM/SDH/ Equivalent do Loopback
Remote/Facility Loopback since this is Facing Customer port
Procedure to Provide Loop
• Run system-view
• Run interface interface-type interface-number
• Run loopback (Local/Remote)
Procedure to Disable the Loopback Function
• Run system-view
• Run interface interface-type interface-number
• Run undo loopback
Note!
• Running a loopback test affects system performance. After a loopback test is
complete, run the undo loopback  command to disable the loopback test
function immediately.
• Always check if only one circuit or multiple circuits (Trunk/Aggregate) riding on
that interface you are planning to provide loop.
• Do not provide loop on a Trunk interface if only 1 circuit is down and the rest
are up. Suggest to use a vacant port (Test port) to isolate the circuit that is
down.
• For circuits reported as Intermittent, Slow or High latency. Always ask client
first to provide a Timewindow of downtime before executing a Looptesting
since this is Service Affecting.
