Cognitive Dissonance Theory

Proposed by Leon Festinger

What is Cognitive Dissonance ?

• Cognitive dissonance is the

mental stress or discomfort
experienced by an individual
who holds two or more
contradictory beliefs, ideas, or
values at the same time
• It is Incompatibility that an
individual might perceive
between two or more
attitudes Or between
behaviour and attitude.
What Is Motivation?

The willingness to exert high levels of effort

towards need, wants and desire, conditioned
by the effort’s ability to satisfy some
individual need.”
What Is Motivation?

Motivation is the result of the interaction of the

individual and the situation.

The level of motivation varies both between individuals

and within individuals at different times.

The types of things that motivate individuals will also

vary by both the individual and the situation.
Process
Needs
-A need is a condition of lack or deficit of something required by the
person.
-Physiological or psychological imbalance leads to needs

Drives
-It is a condition which causes person to work in a particular direction

Incentive
- Anything that can migrate a need and decrease intensity of drive is
called incentive
Three Components of Motivation

Intensity: is concerned with how hard a person tries. This is the

element most of us focus on when we talk about motivation.

Direction: where effort is channeled.

Persistence: a measure of how long a person can maintain his or

her effort.
(Motivated individuals stay with a task long enough to achieve their goal)
Motivators

Intrinsic motivators: A person’s internal desire to do something,

due to such things as interest, challenge and personal satisfaction.

Extrinsic motivators: Motivation that comes from outside the

person, such as pay, bonuses, and other tangible rewards.
