AMERICAN FOOTBALL PLAYER

RISK ASSESSMENT
This risk assessment can be used to review and identify evidence of an individual’s physical
development, technical ability, and American Football (AF) competency. This evidence should be
used to determine if the individual is competent and confident both physically and from a AF skill
level to participate at an appropriate level, that is competitive and comparable to their
team-mates/opposition.

An appropriately qualified coach who has experience in coaching AF at the level in which the
player is proposing to participate should complete this risk assessment.

Appropriate mitigations should be determined based on a careful analysis of identified weaknesses in a player's competencies. This involves creating individualized training plans that target specific skills, such as improving tackle techniques or enhancing physical conditioning. A coach should also consider modifications in playing positions or roles to match the player's current abilities while gradually developing their skills. Regular re-assessment and adaptive strategies are crucial to ensure ongoing progress and safety .

Players in defensive positions may require additional assessment criteria due to the unique physical and tactical demands inherent to these roles. Defense requires specific skills such as advanced awareness and the ability to perform under pressure, as these players must anticipate offensive plays and react quickly. These responsibilities necessitate a thorough understanding of alignment and assignments to effectively counteract the opposition, making additional evaluation essential for safe and competent participation .

An individual's physical characteristics, such as strength, agility, and endurance, directly affect their ability to compete safely in American football. Physical development ensures that players can withstand the sport's physical demands, reduce the risk of injury, and compete effectively against opponents. Proper physical conditioning can enhance performance and confidence, contributing to both player safety and success on the field .

Tackle competency is vital for a player's safety and effectiveness because it ensures that tackles are executed with proper technique, minimizing injury risk for both the tackler and the opponent. Proficient tackling involves correct body positioning and awareness, which enhances a player's ability to disrupt offensive plays safely. It also contributes to team defense dynamics, improving overall game effectiveness .

A coach's expertise can significantly influence the outcomes of a risk assessment due to their understanding of technical skills, physical demands, and safety standards within American football. An experienced coach can provide accurate and nuanced evaluations of a player’s abilities and identify areas needing improvement, ensuring recommendations for player safety and readiness are both relevant and practical. Their insights can also help tailor development programs to enhance player performance and minimize risk .

General AF skills, such as catching and passing, are essential in assessing a player's competitive readiness because they are fundamental to gameplay and team strategies. Proficiency in these skills allows players to effectively participate in offensive and defensive plays, contributing to overall team success. Assessing these skills ensures that the player can meet the competitive standard expected at their level, thereby enhancing both individual and team performance .

Experience in other sports can contribute to a player's success in American football by enhancing their physical development, coordination, and athletic ability. Skills such as agility, strategic thinking, and teamwork gained from other sports can be transferable to football, enriching the player's overall skill set. The diverse environments and levels at which they have previously competed can help them adapt to competitive scenarios in football .

A comprehensive risk assessment is necessary to include both physical and skill-based evaluations because American football is a physically demanding sport that requires high-level technical skills. Physical evaluations ensure the player's body can handle the sport's demands, thereby reducing injury risks. Simultaneously, skill-based evaluations ensure the player possesses the necessary tactical and technical abilities to engage competitively and safely within the game's context. These combined assessments ensure holistic readiness for participation .

A player's confidence and mindset are critical in assessing readiness because they influence the ability to apply skills effectively during a game. Confidence in one's abilities can enhance performance by allowing for optimal decision-making and execution under pressure. A positive mindset aligns with physical competence, minimizing hesitation and errors, which can contribute to safer play and better interaction with team dynamics .

A coach should consider the player's physical development and fitness level, comparing them to the team-mates/opposition to ensure safety during play. Additionally, the player's American Football (AF) skill level should be assessed, including tackle and blocking techniques, general AF skills like catching and passing, and overall awareness of game strategies. The player's confidence and mindset should also align with their abilities to ensure they can compete safely. This holistic assessment ensures the player is physically and mentally ready for the competition level .
