Language B essay is meant to demonstrate insight and knowledge of
1. the target language (category 1)
2. culture (category 2)
3. society or (category 2)
4. literature (category 3)
of the target language
EE CATEGORIES
● Category 1—questions of a general, linguistic nature
● Category 2—a look at society and culture in two ways
○ category 2A—a topic of a sociocultural nature that has had an
influence on the target language
○ category 2B—a topic of a cultural nature specific to a community or
country where the target language is spoken, based on a cultural
object, or “artifact”
● Category 3 —literary analysis of a work originally written in the target
language (not in translation; double dipping not allowed)
