Origins
The state was named after the Alabama River.
The word Alabama is considered to be from two words “Alba and Amo”. Alba refers to
vegetables, herbs, and plants. Amo refers to gatherer or picker.
The combination of these words describe the Alabama Indians who were the early
settlers in the region.
Alabama joined the union as the 22nd state in 1819 and is located in the southern United States.
Fun Fact: It is considered a B-Class Felony to
wrestle a bear in Alabama.
Economy
Alabama ranks among the top states for economic momentum.
Alabama's top commodities include poultry, cattle and calves, greenhouse and
nursery, cotton, and soybeans.
Alabama has a rich history in the aerospace and aviation industry and plays an
important role in space and defense production.
According to the Alabama Department of Commerce, Alabama is home to 780
bioscience companies. The state has made many breakthroughs, including important
research in the treatment of polio and AIDS.
Fun Fact: Windshield wipers were invented in
Alabama.
Climate and Geography
The climate of Alabama is humid subtropical. The heat of summer is tempered
in the south by the winds from the Gulf of Mexico, and in the north by the
elevation above the sea.
The valleys in the north and northeast are usually deep and narrow, but in the
Coastal Plain they are broad and in most cases rise in three successive
terraces above the stream.
Fun Fact: You can go from
Alabama to the Great Lakes entirely
by boat.

Martin Luther King Jr. began his career as a pastor at Dexter Ave. Baptist Church in
Montgomery.
