Muscle Tissue
What is the Muscular tissue?
Muscular tissue is a specialized
tissue in animals which applies
forces to different parts of the
body by contraction. It is
composed of cells that have the
special ability to shorten or
contract to cause the movement of
the body parts.
The cells are long and slender-- they are called muscle fibers
which controls how the organism move. These cells are
arranged in layers that are surrounded by connective tissues.
Sarcoplasm is the cytoplasm that can be found in the muscle
fibers. It has a network of membrane known as the
sarcoplasmic reticulum. Sarcolemma is the membrane
surrounding the muscle fibers.

Muscular tissue performs the following
functions:
1. It helps in movement and locomotion.
2. It supports the bones and other structures.
3. It is responsible for peristalsis and parturition.
3 Types of Muscular Tissue:
Cardiac muscles can only be found
in the heart. It is an involuntary
muscle and has striations. The main
function of the cardiac muscle is to
help the heart to pump bloods
through the cardiac contractions.
3 Types of Muscular Tissue:
Smooth muscles can be found in hollow
visceral organs like intestines, stomach,
liver, lungs, pancreas. These are
involuntary muscles and have no
striations that are controlled by the
nervous system. The main function of
this muscle is to help in peristalsis and
the involuntary movement of the body.
3 Types of Muscular Tissue:
Skeletal muscles can be found attached to the
bones, tendons, nerves, joints. This muscle is
voluntary in action and has striations. It is also
known as striated muscles because of the
presence of the alterative pattern of light and dark
bands. These bands are sarcomeres which are
highly structures of actin, myosin, and proteins.
These increase the muscles' ability to contract and
to stretch. The main function of this muscle is to
provide support in the bones and helps in
movement of the body.
