ARNIS
INTRODUCTION
Arnis, or also known as eskrima, kali and garrote, and
by even more names in different Filipino regional
languages, is an indigenous Filipino martial art and
sport characterized by swinging and twirling
movement, then accompanied by striking, thrusting and
parrying techniques for defense and offense.

Although it became so popular in the early days, its
decline in popularity came by so fast. It happened in
1956 when the Spanish discouraged, and eventually
banned the practice of any kind of art because Filipinos
became too engrossed in arts that they left their lands
untilled and the practice of art lead to serious injuries
and even death.
On December 11, 2009, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo, through Republic Act 9850 declared
Arnis as the Philippine National Martial Art and
Sport. As per R.A. 9850, the official adoption of
arnis as the national martial art and sport shall be
promulgated by inscribing the symbol of arnis in
the official seal of the Philippine Sports
Commission and by making it as the first
competition to be played by participating teams
on the first day in the annual Palarong
Pambansa. The Philippine Sports Commission is
the lead agency to implement the provisions of
this Act.

Eventually, arnis became a fixture in the Filipino martial
arts industry and a staple in the realm of Philippine
sports. Over the years, arnisadors from all over the
country have expressed their commitment to help the
martial art and sport thrive in the country. However,
despite finally receiving formal recognition as the
Philippines’ national martial art and sport in 2009, arnis
is still often overshadowed by more popular sports in the
country.
