Media and Information Literacy Overview

This document compares and contrasts media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy. Media literacy refers to understanding different types of media and the messages they convey. Information literacy is the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, and communicate information. Technology literacy is the ability to use technological tools appropriately and effectively. While media literacy and information literacy both require critical thinking about messages, media literacy focuses more on the appropriate use and evaluation of different media formats, while information literacy judges the importance of messages. Technology literacy refers specifically to using technologies responsibly.
