Carnot Engine

The document discusses the Carnot engine, an ideal heat engine that operates reversibly between two temperatures. It introduces the Carnot engine and cycle, describes Carnot's theorem stating no engine can be more efficient than a Carnot engine between two temperatures, and shows an indicator diagram and equations for work done and efficiency.

Carnot Engine

Carnot engine
• A reversible heat engine operating between
two temperatures is called a Carnot engine.
• Nicolas Sadi Carnot introduced this ideal heat
engine whose cycle of operation is called
Carnot cycle.
• It is an ideal heat engine
Carnot’s Theorem
• No engine can have efficiency more than that
of the Carnot engine, while working between
two given temperatures T1 and T2 of the hot
and cold reservoirs respectively.
• The efficiency of the Carnot engine is
independent of the nature of the working
substance
