KNOWING ONE SELF
• SELF- is the union of elements, namely body, thoughts,
feelings or emotions and sensations that constitute the
individuality and identity of a person.
• The BODY constitute your physical attributes, your
health and your posture and poise.
• Your THOUGHTS, the way you think and how you
perceive things around you, affect how you feel about
them and bring about sensations. These emotions and
sensations that you experience prompt you to act and
behave the way you do.
• The union of theses elements makes up your character
Think about yourself. What do you want to be? Or do you see
yourself what you actually see? Speaking of which, Dr. Barbara
Wong-Fernandez, RGC, et.al., (2016) shared that there are two
categories of self-concept. 1.First is your ideal self, the self that you
aspire to be. The one that you hope will possess characteristics
similar to that of a mentor or some other worldly figure. It is how we
want to be. It is an ideal image that we have developed over time,
based on what we have learned and experienced. It includes
components of what our parents have taught us, what we admire in
others, what our society promotes, and what we think about our
best interest.
Your actual self, however, is the one that you actually see. It
is the self that has characteristics that you were nurtured or,
in some cases, born to have. It is derived from social
interactions that provide insight into how others react to
you. It built on self knowledge. It is who we are actually. It
is how we think, how we feel, look, and act.
What about self-concept? Do you have an idea what a self-
concept is? According to Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez,
RGC, et.al., (2016), Self-concept refers to your awareness
of yourself. It is the construct that negotiates these two
selves. In other words, it connotes first the identification of
the ideal self as separate from others, and second, it
encompasses all the behaviors evaluated in the actual self
that you engaged in to reach the ideal self.
• Your knowledge of yourself and how you manage yourself
impacts directly on your personal effectiveness. Being self-aware,
making the most of your strengths, learning new skills and
techniques and behavioral flexibility are all keys to improving your
personal performance. Our personal effectiveness depends on
our innate characteristics – talent and experience accumulated in
the process of personal development. Talents are first needed to
be identified and then developed to be used in a particular
subject area (science, literature, sports, politics, etc.). Experience
includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of
cognitive and practical activities
• Could you claim that you already achieved a greater
self-knowledge? Maybe you would say, yes. In that
case, you could also easily enumerate your strengths
and your weaknesses. What are those? How it would
affect your relationship to others?
• Most failures emanate from weaknesses that are not
recognized or probably recognized but not given
appropriate attention or remedy. Instead of giving up or
indulging in self-pity, take action.
• Instead of simply focusing on your weaknesses,
recognize your own talents and abilities, build on them,
utilize them to your greatest advantage. This is where you
can build your name and popularity. Handicapped people
like Ana Kristina Arce did not hang over her physical
defect. She is deaf since she was born. She became a
graphic artist and graduated as Magna cum laude at De
La Salle - College of Saint Benilde (CSB) with a degree in
Applied Deaf. So, we shall be inspired with her.
• I f you were ask to describe yourself, you may probably
talk about your physical characteristics, your interests,
your hobbies, your skills or abilities or even your
beliefs.
• Physical attributes such as height and skin complexion,
as well as psychological characteristics such as
temperament ( the combination of mental and
emotional traits of a person) may be inherited from your
parents, some attributes and traits, however may be
brought about by environmental factors.

KNOWING AND ACCEPTING ONESELF

“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true

wisdom” -Lao Tzu
• Why is self-awareness important?
As adolescent, you need to have a clear view of who you
are and who you are not. Knowing yourself reveals
essential marks that may lead you to who you really
want to be in your childhood. The better you understand
yourself, the more you know your capabilities and
limitations, and the easier you can achieve your goals in
life.
Your future is determined by who you are now and how
your pattern thoughts and behaviour affect your decision-
making process. By understanding your thoughts and
actions in the past and observing your behaviour in the
present, you are creating your self awareness. You gain
your intimate and strong connection with the core of
yourself.
You build the bridge towards the direction to reaching your
dreams.
What is self-awareness?
Anyone who is dedicated to self-improvement, personal
development or the higher goal of spiritual growth needs to
actively seek to understand oneself. This is because only
when one understands where one lacks, can he or she
focus their efforts on what to improve.
Definition of self-awareness:
1) Self-awareness is the capacity that a person has to
introspect.( self analysis)
2) It includes gaining an understanding of and insight into
one’s strengths, qualities, weaknesses, defects, ideas,
thoughts, beliefs, ideals, responses, reactions, attitude,
emotions and motivations.
3) Thus introspection also includes assessing how one is
perceived by others and
4) How others are impacted based on one’s behaviour,
responses and conduct.
Psychologists often break self-awareness down into two
• 1. Public Self-Awareness: This type emerges when
people are aware of how they appear to others. Public
self-awareness often emerges in situations when people
are at the centre of attention, such as when giving a
presentation or talking to a group of friends. This type of
self-awareness often compels people to adhere to social
norms. When we are aware that we are being watched
and evaluated, we often try to behave in ways that are
socially acceptable and desirable.
• Private Self-Awareness: This type happens when people
become aware of some aspects of themselves, but only in
a private way. For example, seeing your face in the mirror
is a type of private self-awareness. Feeling your stomach
lurch when you realize you forgot to study for an
important test or feeling your heart flutter when you see
someone you are attracted to are also good examples of
private self-awareness.
DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON
You have learned that your unique self is a result of the
interplay of the different components of your personality,
namely: your body, thoughts, feelings experiences and
spirituality.
The wonders and challenges of what you are going through
now as an adolescent, add meaning to who you are and to
the person you will be in the future.
when you hear the word adolescence, what word
immediately comes to your mind? you may think of words
such as body changes, peers, questions. There must be a
lot of words to describe adolescence:
* some may have fun, but some may also mean
responsibility

10-11 for girl, 11-12 for boys
Adolescence from 13-19 years old, is considered as
transition from childhood to adulthood.
The physical and psychological changes, as well as rapid
mental development take place inevitably.
Physical and chemical changes & their
Implications

were around 13 y/o, which is the onset of adolescence for
most children.
-taller
-muscle grow
Boys and girls experience rapid physical development
brought about by the hormonal changes that takes place in
their body during early adolescence.
You notice physical changes in your sex organs, which are
primary sex characteristics.
Boys come to know that there is production and release of
sperm, spermarche, when they experience nocturnal
emissions or wet dreams. This is an indication that their
male reproductive organs have become mature in functions
and they are capable of reproduction.
In girls, th uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and vagina, grow
rapidly during puberty.
The first menstrual period or menarche, marks a girl’s
sexual maturity and is indicative of her capacity to be
pregnant.
voice, girls hips become round, muscle for boys, body hairs
and pubic hair completed its growth, breast, shoulders, leg
shape.
Both boys and girls experience markly rapid physical
development because of hormonal changes that takes
place in the body.
HORMONES
-are chemical substances that act like messenger
molecules in the body.
-androgens and estrogens are hormones or chemical
subtances produced by endocrine glands that actively affect
physical growth and development.
- present in both male and female
TESTOSTERONE- is an androgen that is strongly
associated in the in the physical maturation of boys.
Increased level of testosterone in males is related to
changes in height, deepening of voice and development of
genitals as well as sexual desires.
ESTRADIOL- is an estrogen that is strongly associated in
the physical development of girls, such as widening of hips,
and breast and uterine development.
SEBACIOUS and apocrine glands- become more active
during this stage (is a microscopic exocrine gland in the
skin that opens into a hair follicle to secrete an oily or waxy
matter called SEBUM which lubricates the hair and skin of
mammals.
Apocrine glands in the skin and eyelid are sweat glands and
in the skin are scent glands, their secretion usually have an
odor.
- armpits,
During adolescence your brain goes through significant
structural development stages. At this stage, the neurons
(information messenger, they use electrical impulses and
chemical signals to transmit information bet diff areas of the
brain) in the corpus callosum thicken and connect the left
hemisphere and right hemisphere of your brain, making the
brain process information faster and more effectively.
Prefontal cortex- involves in decision making, reasoning
and controlling one’s emotion.
Amygdala- the seat of your emotions such anger, sadness
and happiness.
While your amygdala is fully developed to recognize your
emotions, your prefrontal cortex is not yet adequately
mature to reason and understand your experiences and
may fail to control intense emotion. hence your feelings or
emotion sometimes dominate your capacity to think
logically.
