INDIAN ADAPTATION BY
FR. DR. A J MALIN
INTRODUCTION
Edgar A DOLL - 1935
Unique & useful instrument
Most widely used measure of adaptive behaviour in
existence.
Adaptive behaviour is – the functional ability of the
individual to exercise personal independence and
social responsibility.
Social adaptability is the effectiveness of the
individual in coping with natural and social demands
of his environment.
This scale is useful in the assessment of persons with
mental retardation who cannot cope with formal testing
procedures.
This instrument not only provides a measure of social
age / social quotient but also indicates –
Social deficits & Social assets in a growing child
Through Social skill training – socially self sufficient
The 1st attempt to adapt this scale to Indian cultural
setting was done by Rev.Fr Dr. A J Malin while
working at Nagpur Child Guidance Centre
Social intelligence / social maturity matters a big way
in life.
A person who is low on social intelligence may prove
himself unsuccessful in the day to day affairs.
Original level goes up to the level of 25 + years
Nagpur adaptation stops at 15 years –
Reason being – as most of the clinical procedures
of assessment and training are more often limited to
the upper age limit of 15 years, it serves its purpose
well.
This test measures the different social capacities of an individual.
It provides an estimate of social age (SA) and social quotient and
shows a high correlation (0.85) with Standford Binet MA.
It is designed to measure social maturation in eight social areas:
1. SELF HELP GENERAL (SHG) 2. SELF HELP EATING (SHE)
3. SELF HELP DRESSING ( SHD) 4. SELF HELP DIRECTION (SD)
5. OCCUPATION (OCC) 6. COMMUNICATION (COM)
7. LOCOMOTION (LOM) 8. SOCIALIZATION (SOC)
The scale consists of 89 test items grouped into year levels.
PROCEDURE OF
ADMINISTRATION
Semi structured informal atmosphere
Mother along with the child – child alone
Request the mother to keep silent
A brief interview with the child informally would suggest the
approx minimal social development that might have been
attained i.e. Basal social age - the ability to pass all the items
at the particular age.
SCORING
The examiner should collect information on VSMS test items regarding child’s
abilities through direct observation and supplement it by interviewing the mother.
If the particular characteristic described by the item has clearly emerged a mark
may be made on the left side of the item.
If the evidence proves that it has not emerged still a X mark may be put on the left
side of the item.
Add up passed scores - find out Social Age from the VSMS manual.
Compute Social Quotient SA / MA x 100
Assess maturity levels both in terms of SA and SQ for each 8 areas .
Make the graph for clear understanding.
Social Age / Actual Age x 100 = S Q
Range IQ Support
Mild 50-55 to 70 - 75 Reasonable
Moderate 35- 40 to 50-55 Limited
Severe 20-25 to 35-40 Extensive
Profound Below 20-25 Pervasive
