CHICKEN HOUSING
BY MOSES MUCHANGA
Outline
1. Importance of IC housing
2. Characteristics of a good IC house
3. What determines choice of IC housing?
4. Site selection for IC housing
5. Planning for construction
6. Layout and design for IC house
7. Biosecurity structures
8. Accessory structures
Importance OF IC HOUSING
1. Protection from adverse weather (rain, sun, wind, extreme temperature
2. Security from theft and predators
3. Better management of feeds, diseases and breeding
4. Efficient production
5. Available capital (land, money, building materials)
WHAT DETERMINES THE CHOICE OF HOUSING
1. Breed type and end product(meat,
eggs and chicks)
2. Production system
3. Climatic or weather conditions
4. Flock sizes (stocking density)
SITE SELECTION
1. Select a site with no previous poultry activity
2. Land should be flat and elevated
3. Length should run from east to west to minimize sunlight
4. Avoid water logged areas
ACCESSIBILITY
1. Site with good lighting and good
aeration
2. Easily accessible-road network
3. Available water
4. Away from residential area
5. Available Power

Construction materials
Use locally available
materials to reduce costs
•Choose materials based
on availability, tradition
and weather
Group Activity
Costing for construction
for 500 chicken
1. Prepare a list of materials needed for the
construction
2. Break down the project into specific
sections or categories.
3. Estimate the labor required to complete
each part.
4. Make an initial cost estimate based on the
architectural design
Example Materials description Quantities Unit Cost Total Cost
Iron sheets
Timber 2x2
PLANNING FOR CONSTRUCTION
•Architectural plan(housing design)
•Bill of Quantities (BQ)
•Certification from relevant authorities(NEMA, County Gov,) o
Title deed/land lease agreement o County physical planning department o
Business permit o Environmental Impact assessment and certification by
NEMA

GUIDE FOR GOOD VENTILATION FOR OPEN SIDED
HOUSES
WIDTH
The open sided poultry houses in warm
areas should have a width NOT more than 8
metres in order to allow ample ventilation
and aeration at the mid portion
Length
The length of the house maybe of any extent
determined by the number of birds reared
and the availability of land
Entire environment is
manipulated in such a way for
optimal performance of chicken
-Energy consumption is
high!
Factors to consider when
installing accessories
1 Breed type: Meat
. or eggs type
2 Class of chicken: Chicks,
. grower, mature birds
3 Flock
. size
