Objectives of the Unit
After successful completion of session, participants will be able
to:
1. explain the nature of higher education
2. explain the need and scope of higher education
3. discuss the purpose of higher education
4. Explain higher education in Pakistan
5. Explain challenges to higher education
Introduction of Higher Education:
Higher education starts with the inputs of higher secondary
students and the outputs are the graduate and post graduate
even Doctorate and post Doctorate.
Higher Educational Institutions include not only Universities and
Colleges, but also various Professional Schools that provide
preparation in such fields as law, medicine, business, art, music,
and engineering.
Nature, Need and Scope of Higher
Education:
Nature
Higher education improves an individual's quality of life.
A person with higher education has better dietary and health
practices; greater economic stability and security; more
prestigious employment and greater job satisfaction; less
dependency on government assistance, greater community
service and leadership, more volunteer work, more self-
confidence, and less criminal activity.
University:
Universities are like green house where different types of
seeds grow into plants and sent to all over the world.
Educational institution designed for instruction, examination
or both, of students in many branches of advanced learning
and conferring degrees.
According to the modern concept of education, a University
is a city of the universe. This meaning essentially includes
knowledge and information of all disciplines.
Need and Scope
We have terminal degrees in higher education after 2
years, 4 years or 6 years. We achieve the degree of
BA/BSc or BS/MA/MSc.
Different types of graduates are produced which fulfill
the needs of the society.
They are the reasons of expansion of civilization with
new discoveries.
HE Support and enhance the process of economic and social
development
To enable individuals to achieve excellence
To strengthen the micro-management infra-structure of
society and to train national managers" of “collective
leadership"
To create specialized expertise like in agriculture, medicine,
nuclear, space, chemical, and energy fields
To inspire education at different levels and to coordinate at
the national level

Higher education in Pakistan:
National conference was held at Karachi from 27th November to
1st December 1947 under the directions of Quaid e Azam, for
educational reforms of the county.
Quaid e Azam views were;
“we have to build up the character of our future generation. we
should try by sound education to install into them the highest
sense of humor, integrity , responsibility and self less service to
the nation. We have to see that they are fully qualified and
equipped to play their part in the various branches of national
life in a manner which will do honor to Pakistan.”
Challenges in Higher Education:
Higher education is faced with very severe challenges in the
shape of various economic, social, political, and moral
changes, and its future depends on the response made by its
people to these challenges (Rao, 2003).
Theses challenges are multidimensional like population
explosion, lack of resources, non participation of private
sector, inconsistency of policies, political instability and
inefficient educational system (Hayes, 1987).
