Makar Sankranti - festival of the Sun
• Makar Sankranti, is a festival celebrated in India and it’s neighbouring
countries like Nepal and Bangladesh
• It occurs when the sun enters the makara rashi or Capricorn Zodiac as
per the Hindu calendar and generally falls on 14 or 15 of January of
the Gregorian Calendar
• It is called
• Thai Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
• Makara Sankranti in Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, and
Maharashtra
• Uttarayan in Gujarat
• Magh Bihu in Assam
• It is a major harvest festival across India.
Festival of Harvest
• It spans across four days:
First day is Lohri or Bhogi,
Second day is Makar Sankranti or Thai Pongal
Third day is Mattu Pongal or Kanuma and
Fourth day is Kaanum Pongal or Mukkanuma.
• People put colourful kolams in front of their houses to decorate
• In Tamil Nadu they make a sweet dish called Pongal with cow milk, rice
from the new harvest and fresh jaggery in new pots and distribute it after
offering to the Sun god.
• Farmers show their appreciation to cattle by painting their horns and hooves
and decorating them with jingling ornaments like bells.
• People participate in different activities like
Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu
Kite flying in Gujarat
