Introduction
Food is the second priority of man in his list of
basic needs, the first being water. Food refers to
anything which gives energy and is able to meet
physiological needs for growth of human body.
Importance of food
Food is a source of energy for man. It is used for
maintaining all body processes and activities.
For physical and mental development.
For protection and regulation of body needs
Food refers to “ any substance that is ingested and is
utilised by the body for growth and sustenance of life “.
Important sources of food
AGRICULTURE – Agriculture products form the major source of
food for man. To increase agricultural productivity, improved
irrigation systems were developed.
FISHERIES AND SEA FOOD – Fish and marine organisms too
serve as human food. They belong to the animal food category.
LIVESTOCK – Domestic animals reared in our houses like goat,
cow, hen etc provide meat to us.
Apart from this growing mushroom is also now getting significant
attains as it contains high level of protein.
World food problems
The global food problem consists of the lack of food
provision for the Earth’s population.
As per estimates of Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO), about 840 million people remain chronically
hungry and out of this 800 million are living in the
developing world.
In last decade, it is decreasing at the rate of 2.5 million
per year, but at the same time world’s population is
increasing.

Global Report on Food Crises 2022
The 2022 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC 2022) highlights the
remarkably high severity and numbers of people in Crisis or worse
(IPC/CH Phase 3 or above) or equivalent in 53 countries/territories,
driven by persistent conflict, pre-existing and COVID-19-related
economic shocks, and weather extremes. The number identified in the
2022 edition is the highest in the report’s six-year existence.
Conclusion
A world where every person who access to sufficient food to
sustain a healthy and productive life, where malnutrition is
absent, and where food originates from efficient, effective
and low cost food systems that are compatible with
sustainable use of natural resources.
