National holiday of Azerbaijan
Novruz in Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Novruz Bayramı) is a
traditional holiday which celebrates the New Year and the
coming of Spring. When Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet
Union, the celebration of Novruz was generally unofficial
and at times even prohibited. Currently in Azerbaijan,
Novruz is treated as an official public holiday. In accordance
with Article 105 of the Labour Code of Azerbaijan passed in
2006, workers receive five days off for Novruz. After
neighbouring Iran, Azerbaijan hosts the longest observance
and number of public days related to Novruz, with a total
(including weekend) of 5 days. Usually, preparation for
Novruz begins a month prior to the festival. Each Tuesday
people celebrate the day of one of the four elements – water,
fire, earth and wind. People do house cleaning, plant trees,
make new dresses, paint eggs, and make national pastries
such as shekerbura, pakhlava, shorgoghal, in additional to a
great variety of national cuisine. Wheat is fried with
kishmish (raisins) and nuts (govurga). As a tribute to pre-
Islamic Zoroastrian beliefs, every Tuesday during the four
weeks before the holiday, children jump over small bonfires
and candles are lit. On the holiday eve, the graves of
relatives are visited and tended.
The Day of the State Flag of Azerbaijan
(Azerbaijan:Azərbaycan Respublikasının Dövlət Bayrağı Günü)
is a national holiday in Azerbaijan that is celebrated annually on
November 9. State Flag Day was established in 2009 by order of
President Ilham Aliyev to commemorate the anniversary of
adoption of "The Tricolour Flag" (Azerbaijani: Üçrəngli bayraq)
as the flag of tbe Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918. It
has been celebrated as a non-working public holiday ever since.
In 2010, a ceremony was held on National Flag Square in Baku
for the holiday.
2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Azeri flag. In
Binəqədi raion, the Youth and Sports Department jointly
organized an event entitled "The Eternal Pin of Independence".
The Youth Union of the Ganja City Branch of the New
Azerbaijan Party organized a march "One flag for everyone" on
the occasion.
In 2019, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu
commemorated the day with a joint video with Azerbaijani
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in which he said that
"The freedom, future and prosperity are connected to one
another". At the same time, 9 November was declared to be
Azerbaijani State Flag Day in the US state of Oklahoma.
The Victory Day (Azerbaijani: Zəfər Günü) is a public holiday in Azerbaijan that is
celebrated on 8 November, in commemoration of Azerbaijan being the victor in the
2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, officially labelled as The Patriotic War. Established by the
decree of the President of Azerbaijan, dated 2 December 2020, the holiday is
celebrated on the day of the capture of Shusha. It is a non-working holiday.
On 27 September 2020, clashes broke out in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region,
which is de facto controlled by the self-proclaimed and unrecognized Republic of
Artsakh, but de jure part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani forces first advanced in Fuzuli and
Jabrayil districts, taking their respective administrative centres. From there, they
proceeded towards Hadrut. Azerbaijani troops began to advance more intensively after
the fall of Hadrut around 15 October, and Armenians began to retreat, with
Azerbaijanis then taking control of Zangilan and Qubadli. Launching an offensive for
Lachin, they also penetrated into Shusha District through its forests and mountain
passes.
Following the capture of Shusha, the second-largest settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh, a
ceasefire agreement was signed between the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the
Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the President of Russia, Vladimir
Putin, ending all hostilities in the area from 00:00, 10 November 2020 Moscow Time.
Under the agreement, the warring sides will keep control of their currently held areas
within Nagorno-Karabakh, while Armenia will return the surrounding territories it
occupied in 1994 to Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan will also gain land access to its Nakhchivan
exclave bordering Turkey and Iran. Approximately 2,000 Russian soldiers will be
International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis
(Azerbaijani: Dünya Azərbaycanlılarının Həmrəyliyi
Günü) is an annual public holiday in Azerbaijan
celebrating the worldwide solidarity and unity of
Azerbaijanis. The day was inspired by the dismantling
of border fences between Soviet Azerbaijan and Iran in
December 1989 and the collapse of the Berlin Wall in
the same year.
In 1989 the local residents took down the Soviet–
Iranian border in then-Nakhichevan ASSR to reunite
with Iranian Azerbaijanis. On the same day, the first
World Congress of Azerbaijanis took place in Istanbul.
The day was first promoted on 16 December 1991 by
then-Chairman of the Nakhchivan Autonomous
Republic Supreme Assembly Heydar Aliyev. The
various governments that have been in power since
Azerbaijan's independence from the Soviet Union have
all marked that day. Aliyev raised the issue before the
Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR to declare that date
a holiday at state level. The holiday eventually gained a
state status in 1992, with Abulfaz Elchibey's
presidential decree.
The day was entered into the Labor Code of Azerbaijan
