Think of an ethical
issue in the business
set up.
What is Ethics?
1. “Ethics came from the Greek
word ethos which means
“character, habit, dweling
place”.
Thus, ‘ethos” may refer to one’s
character which is a product of what one
does regularly and repeatedly so that it
has already become a routine.
What is Ethics?
“Ethics is the discipline that
examines one’s moral standards
or the moral standards of a
society.
It asks how these standards apply to
our lives and whether those standards
are reasonable or unreasonable.
What is Ethics?
The discipline of ethics essentially
boils down to a search for
underlying objective standards and
reasoning for taking a particular
course of action or conduct or
desisting from an action or conduct,
as the case may be.”
What is Ethics?
“Ethics is the study of what is
good and evil, right and wrong
and just and unjust.”
What is Ethics?
“Ethics is the branch of philosophy
that deals with morality.’
Ethicists are concerned with a wide range
of topics, such as human nature; the
meaning of life; how judgments are made
and other things. Moral or ethical theories
offer the means of understanding
significant elements in these and other
areas of inquiry.
What is Ethics?
“Ethics then becomes a
practical science designed to
test logically the rightness or
wrongness of human acts.”
What is Morality?
The term morality is also used to refer to the
quality of rightness or wrongness of a
particular action. For example, we may
inquire: what is the morality of whistle
blowing, bribery or deceptive advertising?
This means that we are asking whether these
acts - whistle blowing, bribery and deceptive
advertising – are right or wrong.
What is Morality?
Ethics, then, is the philosophical
study of morality; the inquiry into
the goodness or badness,
rightness or wrongness, justness
and unjustness of human actions.
Ethics is one of the major
branches of philosophy.
ETHICS AS A PRESCRIPTIVE SUBJEC
The primordial questions that
students of ethics ask is: “Given
a particular situation, what
should a person do?” With this,
ethics is not just a descriptive
subject but a prescriptive one.
ETHICS AS A PRESCRIPTIVE SUBJEC
Ethics is a prescriptive subject because it is
not only concerned about describing the
facts, the circumstances of the human
agent, and the conflicting principles that
arise from the situation. Instead, ethics is
concerned about prescribing what should
be done after knowing all the facts, the
circumstances and the principles involved.
ETHICS AND LAW
While abiding the law is an important
component of any business activity, it does
not guarantee the fulfillment of the
requirements of ethics by the
businessperson. In other words, one
cannot equate ethics with the law and
vice versa.
WHAT IS BUSINESS ETHICS
Business Ethics can be defined as a
systematic study of ethics as applied
to the issues arising in business.
Business Ethics is the study of good
and evil, right and wrong, and just
and unjust actions in business
WHAT IS BUSINESS ETHICS
Business Ethics involves the
application of standards of moral
behavior to business situations.
Business Ethics is the study of

WHAT IS BUSINESS ETHICS
Business Ethics is a form of applied
ethics. It not only includes the analysis
of moral norms and moral values but
also attempts to apply the conclusions

institutions, organizations, activities
and pursuits that we call business.
