• Horticulture in the area of agriculture that deals
with the growing of plants, usually in a garden.
• It is derived from Latin hurtos, meaning
“garden” and cultura, meaning “cultivation”
Horticulture is also defined as the science and
arts of growing fruits, vegetables, ornamental
trees, bushes, and flowers.
• Horticulture, along with forestry and agronomy
(referred to as large-scale cultivation of field
crops), constitutes the three broad branches
of agricultural science.
The field of horticulture is
formally divided into four
categories.
Pomology
• Pomology or fruit growing includes the practice
of growing fruits and nuts. The cultivation of
grapes, called viticulture is a specialized
branch of pomology
Olericulture
• Olericultures or vegetable growing deals with
the culture of nonwoody or herbaceous plants.
These plants are usually divided according to
the sources of their edible parts: edible root
(e.g., carrot), bulb, (e.g., onion), stem (e.g,
asparagus), flower (e.g., cauliflower), tuber
(e.g., potato), fruit (e.g., tomatoes) Leaf (e.g.,
lettuce), and seed (e.g., bean).
Floriculture
• Floriculture or flower growing covers the area
of growing herbaceous flowering plants and
houseplants.
Ornamental horticulture
• Ornamental horticulture primarily deals with
the growing of trees and shrubs for use in
landscape design and often with the design
and maintenance of gardens, parks, and
recreational areas, such as gold courses and
playing fields.
