VARIATION
GRADE 9 - MATHEMATICS
OBJECTIVE OF THE DAY
1. Identify Variation
2. Identify types of variation
3. Identify Direct variation
4. Learn direct variation solving
5. Learn direct variation graph
WHAT DOES VARIATION
MEAN?
A variation is a relation between
a set of values of one variable
and a set of values of other
variables.
4 TYPES OF VARIATION
1. Direct variation
2. Inverse variation
3. Joint variation
4. Combined variation
Direct variation
Direct variation exists between
any two variables when one
quantity is directly dependent on
the other.
Direct Variation
(sample statement)
1. Y varies directly to X
2. Y is directly proportional to X
3. Y is proportional to X
Example of Direct Variation
The area of wall is directly proportional
to the number of paint.
The amount of money you have is
directly proportional to the things you can
buy
Example of Direct Variation
The distance travelled is proportional to
time travelled
The fare of transportation varies directly
to the distance of destination
Direct Variation Formula
Y varies directly to X can be
written into :
Wherein K is constant.
Manipulating Formula
Direct Variation Example
1. Claro ICT high school is raising
awareness towards waste materials,
therefore they implemented that for each
1 kilogram of waste materials collected
you will earn an extra 5 points in your
written works grade.
Direct Variation Example
1. The kilogram of waste material varies
directly to written works grade, therefore
2. Y = kilogram of waster materials (1kg)
3. X = written works grade (5 points)
4. K = is missing
Direct Variation Formula
To find the value of K simply transfer X to
the other side of the equation.
With that we can find the value of K
Direct Variation Formula
Substitute the value of x and y.
, therefore the value of K is 0.2
Now let’s find the grades we can get with the
proceeding kilograms
Direct Variation Formula
Direct Variation Solving
1. Find the possible points for
the 2-kilogram, 3-kilogram, 4
kilogram and 5 kilogram.
Direct Variation Solving
2 kilogram 3 kilogram 4 kilogram 5 kilogram
Y=2 Y=3 Y=4 Y=5
K = 0.02 K = 0.02 K = 0.02 K = 0.02
X=? X=? X=? X=?
