DRIVING TOOLS
Driving tools are steel tools that are used to
mount, restore, and maintain a wide range of
structures. Drivers use mechanical and manual
power to drill, insert, and push screws, nuts, and
bolts into surfaces.
Hammer
This is a tool that has a heavy metal
head attached to a handle and that is
used for hitting nails or breaking things
apart.
TYPES OF HAMMER
CLAW HAMMER
Claw Hammer is generally used for
heavy work. The face is used for
hammering of striking the nail. The
opposite end of the head forms a curved
claw which is used for pulling out old or
poorly driven nail.
CROSS PEEN HAMMER
Cross Peen Hammer is similar to the
claw hammer, the only difference – the
peen is opposite the face. The peen is
used for tapping a small nail held
between the thumb and fingers before
finally using the face.
BALL PEEN HAMMER
Ball Peen Hammer has a round
ball- like peen opposite the
face. This is best for metal
work.
MALLET
A mallet is a kind of hammer, often made
of rubber or sometimes wood, that is smaller
than a maul or beetle, and usually has a
relatively large head. The term is descriptive of
the overall size and proportions of the tool,
and not the materials it may be made of,
though most mallets have striking faces that
are softer than steel.
The Joiner’s Mallet
The joiner’s mallet is characterized by
two slightly angled flat faces and a
large head. They vary in size, but are
usually quite large. They excel at heavy
chisel work, where both power and
precision are required. The flat faces
provide you with accuracy, while the
heft provides power.
The Carver’s Mallet
The carver’s mallet is round and
often turned from a single piece of
wood. It excels at driving gouges
and other various tools to create
intricate carvings. The round
shape gives the user excellent
directional control.
The Dead-blow Mallet
The dead-blow mallet is an
unusual one. It is characterized by
a hollow body filled with sand or
metal filings. It shines at driving
pieces of furniture together. The
heavy material inside the hollow
body provides a lot of mass to
persuade joinery together.
The Rubber Mallet
A rubber mallet is great for joining
two pieces of wood together
without damaging their surfaces
and leaving ugly dents or
scratches on them. It can also be
used to drive nails into the wood
without causing unwanted damage
to the surface of either piece of
wood.
The Journeyman’s Mallet
The journeyman’s mallet is
characterized by its small size.
This one has a turned handle and
round, brass head, but they do
come in many shapes. Many
woodworkers prefer one that has a
head with flat faces like those
found on the joiner’s mallet.
Nail Set
A nail set is a small tool
designed to hammer finish
nails flush to the surface, using
a pointed end and a blunt end.
Made of heavy tempered alloy
steel, it is irreplaceable due to
its dimensions and heft.
SCREWDRIVER
A screwdriver is a tool
that is used for turning
screws. It consists of a
metal rod with a flat or
cross-shaped end that
fits into the top of the
screw.
Flat Head (or Slotted Head) Screwdriver
A flat-head screwdriver
is a screwdriver with a
wedge-shaped flat tip,
used to tighten or
loosen screws that
have a straight, linear
notch in their heads.
Phillips Screwdriver
The Phillips screwdriver
is mostly used in the
automotive industry and
it has a cross (X) shape
at the tip. This type of
tool is used to turn
screws with more torque
to achieve the desired fit
and is less prone to
slippage.
Pozidriv Screwdriver
The Pozidriv screwdriver,
designed in Europe with
offset 45-degree cross
signs, offers better
resistance to slipping and
stability compared to the
Phillips' screwdriver.
Robertson or Square Screwdriver
A Robertson screw, also
known as a square screw
or Scrulox, features a
square-shaped socket in
the head and a square
protrusion on the tool,
with a slight taper for
easier tool inserting and
screw retention.
Torx Screwdriver
A torx screwdriver is a hand
tool used for tightening and
untightening torx screws on
a range of applications. A
torx screwdriver features a
torx tip type that enhances
torque and grip of the
screw.
Hex Screwdriver or Hexagon Screwdriver
A hex screwdriver is a
tool designed to drive
bolts and screws with a
hexagonal socket. Its
precise fit ensures
optimal torque and
minimal slippage,
safeguarding the screw's
integrity.
