Introduction
Project: Suzlon One Earth Global Corporate
Headquarters
Location: Pune, Maharashtra, India
Site area: 4,53,930 square feet (10.4 acre)
Achitect: Prof. Christopher Benninger
It is situated in Pune, India, it is the eco-friendly, self-sufficient
headquarters of the Suzlon company and has achieved a LEED
Platinum and TERI GRIHA 5 Star certification
The campus is a mirror of the values and vision of the patrons
who
commissioned it and who built one of the world’s largest
sustainable energy
companies.
The campus is completely powered by renewable energy,
including hybrid wind turbines, solar panels and photovoltaic cells.
Why One Earth ?
The name is a dedication to our
precious home, Earth.
It highlights Earth’s unique existence
as an
Eco system.
It reinforces Suzlon’s belief that co-
existence and responsible usage of
natural
resources are the only way to achieve
sustainability.
Devoted to Suzlon’s efforts across the
globe to create a sustainable future.
Landscape
Suzlon One Earth derives its inspiration from Indian historical
campuses like
Fatehpur Sikri and the Meenakshi Temple complex in Madurai..
A series of served and server spaces were created which cover
the lion’s share of the Campus, where people work that can
accommodate modular walls and furniture systems.
The design process started with a creating a central gathering
space, or Brahmasthan, with the sky as its ceiling.
There is visual access to the large central gardens from
everywhere.
The Deepa Stambh is set in the centre of the Suzlon reflecting
pool. In the background these see a cascade of water falls.
Large water body in the central court helps in improving the air
quality and for
evaporative cooling.
The central garden plaza encourages communication, interaction
and innovation amongst the 2300 colleagues and provides a
stunning aesthetic presentation for visitors.

Energy Efficiency Result
• 100% renewable energy Campus: 155 kW on site wind solar
hybrid system
Wind : 4.75 KW X 18 no. turbines
Solar PV : 0.23 KW X 243 Panels
BIPV : 0.105 KW X 128 Modules
• Through sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting, on-site
waste conversion and an ‘Office in Garden’ design to maximise
daylight use,
Suzlon One Earth successfully reduces its operating cost by 35%.
• 100% External and Common area lighting, Indoor A/c units
and communication server on renewable energy resources .
• LED for outdoor and street lighting, occupancy sensors
• 1 year, renewable energy generated
on-site :0.122 million units
off-site: 4.26 million units
Water Usage Practices
• 100% waste water treatment through on site sewage treatment
plant
• 100% use of recycled water for landscaping, air-conditioning
and flushing
• Landscape with naturalized and adapted plant species
• Innovative rain water harvesting system -pebble drains to
collect excess water
• Use of low flow faucets, touch less urinals with sensors and
dual flush
• Actual data for the year 2010-11 reveals that 0% water is
disposed and around 56% water is recycled
Waste Management Practices
•Implementation of Zero waste practices.
• Waste segregation at source where bio degradable waste
processed in OWC on site system and non-biodegradable waste
processed through approved and certified recycling vendors.
• Total organic waste generated from the campus during last year
was
19,000 kg
•Generated organic manure used for landscaping.
• Green housekeeping practices with appropriate systems and
certified products
SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL USAGE
• Regional Material : Around 80% of regional materials
( within a radius of 800 km) are used in this project
• Recycle Content : Products with high recycle content are
used, which measure to about 13.26% of the total value of
the materials in the project.
• Rapidly Renewable Material : Around 10% of rapidly
renewable material eg. bamboo flooring and furniture used
80% Regional Materials
Environmental Quality
• CO2 sensors in densely occupied spaces
• CO sensors at parking
• HVAC system designed for 30% higher ventilation
rates than ASHARE standards.
• Use of low volatile emitting adhesives, sealants,
paints, carpet and composite wood products.
• The entire Campus is a NO SMOKING zone for
overall health benefits and environmental quality
improvement.
Green Practices
• Green Design Education –through defined green
awareness signage, Wind Gallery and open door
policy for visitors on defined days .
• Green Housekeeping : green housekeeping
products
and process are practiced.
• Designed communication through customized and
commissioned artworks with themes like motivation,
sustainability, vision and team
work.
• All systems are controlled and monitored with the
centralized Integrated Building Management System
(IBMS)
Conclusion
Suzlon One Earth, spread over 10
acres, this magnificent structure is
one of the largest green building
projects of the country and is also
one of the India’s first buildings to be
LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) certified.
• The material used in the premises is
also eco friendly. They also ensure
minimum wastage of water and
energy. They have adopted green
practices as well.
• If such practices are followed by the
companies or housing companies too,
we can surely reach the required
level of sustainability and wouldn't
see our future generations suffering
badly.
