RIBOFLAVIN

(Vitamen B2)
• Riboflavin Also known as vitamen B2 .
• The name Riboflavin comes from
• “Ribose” (the sugar whose reduced from, ribitol)
• “Flavin” the ring-moiety which imparts the yellow color to oxidized
molecule (from latin falavus, “yellow”)
• It is the central components of two cofectors.
• FAD (flavin adenin dinucleotide)
• FMN(falvin mononucleotide)
Characteristics:
1) Riboflavin is a yellow-orange crystaline powder with a site order and
bitter taste .
2) It is soluble in polar solvent , such as water and aqueous sodium
chloride solution and slightly soluble in alcohols.
3) It is not soluble in non-Polar or weekly polar solvents such as
chloroform , benzene or acetone.
4) The reduce form , which occure In metabolism along With the
oxidized form is colorless.
